Rudy Fernandez to try new cancer treatment in the U.S.

Having experienced the usual chemotherapy sessions, action superstar Rudy Fernandez is set to fly to the U.S. next week with wife Lorna Tolentino to try a new treatment designed by a Filipina and an American doctor.

Action superstar Rudy Fernandez is scheduled to go to the U.S. next week to try a new treatment designed by a Filipina and an American doctor. Rudy, who just turned 56, is hoping that the treatment would pave the way for his full recovery from cancer.

"It's a new drug for pancreatic cancer," explained Rudy to the press last Monday, March 3, during his birthday celebration held at the William J. Shaw Pavilion of the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, Mandaluyong City.

In a published interview with entertainment columnist Ricky Lo of Philippine Star, Rudy narrated the ordeal he went through during his therapies in the past two years.

"I have undergone two cycles of chemo for the first protocol and then six cycles for the second protocol," Daboy told Ricky. "Mga eight months ‘yon. Then, I underwent a radio-frequency-ablation treatment on my liver, and radiation. But I refused another kind of treatment because of its side effects—acne on your scalp, all over your face, all over your body."

OUTSIDE TREATMENT. Daboy will be accompanied by his wife Lorna Tolentino throughout his U.S. journey which, according to the actor, would take two months.

"Kasi after that, doon na ako magpapa-check up... ‘Yong medicine na ginagamit sa akin dito, dito approve na, pero sa U.S. hindi pa. So ‘pag doon naman, clinical trial, so mas okay."

The couple intends to make the most of their stay, so they're planning to take in all the possible activities, and even commitments, on their overseas itinerary. On top of their list is the upcoming boxing match of Pinoy ring icon Manny Pacquiao against Mexican juggernaut Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15 (March 16 here in Manila) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Sabay bakasyon," smiled Rudy to the reporters, "'tsaka, siyempre, para makapanood ng laban, 'yong fight ni Pacquiao-Marquez. So, nandoon din kami sa Las Vegas."

Another source of pride for the couple was the news that an award will be handed to Rudy in Los Angeles, California, along with other big names in Philippine entertainment.

"Rudy will receive an award," Lorna proudly informed Ricky, "together with Dolphy, Bong [Revilla], Tito [Sotto], Vic [Sotto] and Joey [de Leon], and other Filipino talents."
