Francis Magalona’s illness is "treatable" and he remains in good spirits

Friends and relatives of Francis Magalona are optimisticthat the rapper-TV host will prevail against his battle with leukemia.

Two days after it was publicly revealed that the well-likedmusician is in need of blood donors to replace the initial ones he alreadyconsumed in the hospital, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) received areport that fans and friends started coming in droves to the Medical City inOrtigas, Pasig City to donate blood.

Other than the call for blood donors, Francis hasmade it clear that he doesn't want his current fragile health tobecome a "media circus."

He issued an official statement yesterday, August 14, whichwas read on air by Eat Bulaga! hostVic Sotto.

In the statement relayed via text message, Kiko(Francis's nickname) confirmed: "Ngayon meron akong isangpagsubok na dapat daanan at ang hiling ko lang ang inyong pang-unawa atsuporta. I have been diagnosed with leukemia and I am preparing for mytreatment."

He ended his message on apositive note: "Sa tulong ng Panginoon kakayanin ko po ito. Abangan ninyo angaking pagbabalik. ‘Di ko lang kayo miss, love ko kayong lahat."

GRADUAL SYMPTOMS. Inan interview with music columnist Pocholo Concepcion, Francis's wife Pia Arroyoconfided that her husband started exhibiting symptoms of the disease aroundMarch of this year.

"It was very gradual, hindi siya biglang lumabas. We don'twant to use the word ‘curable,' but the doctors say it's treatable," she toldPocholo.

Pia's statement was acknowledged by TAPE Inc. executive Malou Choa-Fagar in a text message to YES! magazine's Anna Pingol. Malou's message was forwarded by Annato PEP yesterday afternoon, August 14.

"Francis is in good spirits," she said. "Palabiro parin."

She revealed though that Francis's health during Eat Bulaga's recent U.S. visit revealeda startling pattern.

"Nilalagnat na tuwing hapon. Even before pa umalis for U.S.ganun na. Nung papuntang [Las] Vegas through bus, sobrang tamlay na," related Ms. Malou.


Francis's condition was so evident that when Wally Bayola'sdoctor dad saw Francis in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Romeo Bayola promptlyremarked, "You're sick."

The iconic rapper immediately informed TAPE Inc. head honchoTony Tuviera and the trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon of hiscondition the same day he learned of the diagnosis.

Kiko has been with EatBulaga! for 10 years and will turn 43 years old this coming October 4.
