Maxene Magalona gives an update on her dad Francis's condition

Maxene Magalona, the Master Rapper Francis Magalona's daughter related on Startalk how she broke down and panicked when her sister told her that the hospital where FrancisM was confined cannot find a bloodmatch for him. "I called everyone I know and asked them na kung puwede pumunta sila sa MedicalCity, at tignan kung match ba ang platelets sa dad ko. That same day, the newsbroke out and then, ang daming taong pumunta. As in, in a few days, nakahanapna ng six matche


Contrary to rumors about Master RapperFrancis Magalona already weak and bald, news came out that he was about to bedischarged from the hospital with a clean bill of health. Recently, Francis wasdiagnosed with cancer of the blood, also known as leukemia. Francis's daughterMaxene recently revealed to the entertainment press that her father wasresponding very much well to chemotherapy, possibly due to his positive outlookand joyful mood.

Maxene once again guests in Startalk to give fans of the MasterRapper some needed updates on her dad's improving condition.

So, how is Kiko?

"Ok naman siya," Maxene cheerilyanswered. "He's responding very well to treatment. Nagulat nga mga doctors natalagang kayang-kaya niyang [Francis] i-take yung chemotherapy treatment.Kakatapos lang ng seven-day chemo niya a few days ago. ‘Tapos, we're justwaiting for results kung kailan siya puwedeng ma-discharge sa hospital at kungkailan siya puwedeng umuwi to continue recovery at home."

Startalkhost Joey de Leon, after hearing the good news from Maxene, fondly asked, "Nakausapko din minsan [si Francis], ang gulu-gulo [makulit] pa rin, e! Puwede ba naminmalaman kung ano ginagawa nun ‘pag wala siyang treatment?"

Maxene smiled and answered, "Actually,the whole day lang ‘pag nasa hospital, ang ginagawa lang niya, e, kinakalikotniya mga camera niya, nanonood ng mga movies, nakikinig ng music—at lately nag-e-editsiya ng kanyang picture para sa Camera Club of the Philipines. He's keepinghimself busy talaga."

POEMTO A FRIEND. Joeyde Leon wrote a poem for Tito Sotto and Francis Magalona. Have Maxene alreadyread this poetic tribute to her father?

"Actually, when I found out about it, e,I told him about it agad," Maxene said. She then admitted, "Pero hindi pa naminnababasa dahil wala kaming makuhang copy. Ngayon, ngayon ko lang nakita at angganda."

That said, Maxene proceeded to read outJoey's poem aloud so Francis, who was watching the show from the hospital atthat time, could listen. The poem read:

After Maxene ended the poem,Joey de Leon related to fellow Startalk co-host Butch Francisco andMaxene that he made the poem because of his recent conversation with Kiko. He said,"Sa kanya nanggaling ‘yan, e. Kaya ko nagawa yung term sa poem na ‘yan, e. Nungnakausap ko siya. E, sabi niya, ‘Pare, wala ito. Bump along the way.'"

THEOLDER KIDS ARE IN CHARGE FOR NOW. Since Francis'sabsence, Maxene revealed that she, along with her two older siblings was giventhe responsibility of taking care of their younger brothers and sistsers.

"Kaming tatlong malalaki ang in chargesa mga smaller ones ngayon," Maxene said. She added, "lahat talaga kami ngayonnagtutulungan. Yung mga kapatid ko, like si Elmo—he's the youngest—siya talagayung nakakaintindi nung gravity of the situation. Pero yung dalawang bata, theyask lang talaga, ‘Ano'ng nangyari kay Papa?' Sabi namin, ‘May sakit si Papa, sohe has to be in the hospital.' Kailan siya uuwi, they ask. We just tell them nahindi pa natin alam pero kailangan ni Papa ito para gumaling."

MAXENEPANICKED AT FIRST, BUT GOT BLESSINGS AFTER. Butchasked that when Maxene and the rest of the family first heard of the news, didthey all panic?

"Oo," Maxene admitted. "Ako, noongnalaman, una talaga, e, bumagsak ang mundo ko. I didn't know what to do. Peroang pinaka-talagang time na nag-panic ako was when my ate called me andinformed me na tumawag siya sa blood bank ng Medical City. The nurses said thatwala daw mahanap na platelets. I kept crying and sabi ko na bakit walangmahanap na match. So tumawag ako—wala na akong pakilalam kung malaman ng tao—andI called everyone I know and asked them na kung puwede pumunta sila sa MedicalCity, at tignan kung match ba ang platelets sa dad ko. That same day, the newsbroke out and then, ang daming taong pumunta. As in, in a few days, nakahanapna ng six matches. Ang bilis talaga, sobrang thankful kami."

"Biglang na-high blood si Kiko," Joeyquipped, referring to the sudden availability of so many blood donors.

Maxene laughed and continued her storyby saying, "Yun na nga, actually yung Medical City, they were turning awaypeople na saying na next time na kasi madami na. Pero nag-accept ngayon ngdonations sa Red Cross. Yung kay Rosa Rosal."

When asked what her message was for herdad, Maxene lovingly said, "Hi, Papa! I know na you're getting better na and Ihope na ipagpatuloy lang talaga ito. I know that you're a fighter and alam kongmakakayanan nyo ito because idol kayo ng maraming tao at idol kayo ng buongbayan. So, makakayanan ninyo ito because strong na strong kayo.

"Remember that we'reall here for you. Lahat, hindi lang ako, hindi lang ang family natin, kundiang buong bansa nandito para sa iyo. I love you so much, and I miss you and Godbless."
