John "Sweet" Lapus wants to try TV and film directing

First order of business for John Lapus was to put at ease his Adik Sa 'Yo co-star Dennis Trillo, who knows "Sweet" has a crush on him.

Multi-awarded comedian John "Sweet" Lapus lives a blessed life. Spanning 16 years, his career in showbiz illustrates that he has been successful in almost all aspects of the industry: hosting, writing, acting, singing, and even being someone else's staff member.

But if there is one thing Sweet wants to do next, it's to direct television shows and movies.

"I would like to try directing in the future kasi nakapag-direct na 'ko sa stage pero sa TV at pelikula hindi pa. Magaling ako sa reinvention... kaya ko ire-invent ang sarili ko," Sweet told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the press conference of his new show, Adik Sa 'Yo, last June 3.

Is he open to directing indie movies?

Two years from now hopefully may bagong batang bakla na, you know, mas sariwa, mas magaling, mas fresh, it will be his turn. So, ako naman I will venture into another aspect of the industry," explained Sweet.

The Showbiz Central host told PEP that he is planning to go to film school to prepare for the new venture. He is also studying the works of directors he admires, particularly Chito Roño (Dekada '70) and Joel Lamangan (Mano Po).

What film genre does he want to direct?

So, malamang I would venture into comedy when I direct in the future," he said.

Who are the talents that he would like to tap? "Magsisimula ako sa mga kaibigan ko... Sina Eugene Domingo, Jolina [Magdangal]. Bahala na... let's see."

DIRECTED BY IDOL. In GMA-7's Adik Sa 'Yo, Sweet plays July, the biggest fan of Ruben (Dennis Trillo). This upcoming primetime romantic comedy is being directed by Sweet's idol, Direk Joel Lamangan. How is it like working under him?

I'm really very professional.

How about his real and reel-life crush Dennis Trillo?

"In a way, kinausap ko naman si Dennis prior to yung taping namin. Kami yung madalas niyang nakakasama, kami yung family niya, e," Sweet said.
