During the press conference of the indie film Astig last July 9 at the La Carmela Café in Makati City, the main cast of the episodic film were present, as well as the director, GB Sampedro.
Direk GB is a director who has established himself in ABS-CBN morning talk shows such as Boy and Kris, Homeboy, and the current Ruffa and Ai. GB graduated at San Juan de Letran with a degree in BS Accounting.
PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked Direk GB about his blossoming romance with comedienne Candy Pangilinan.
The Astig director says that he and Candy have known each other for quite some time now.
"Nagge-guest siya sa mga shows, Homeboy, Ruffa and Ai, Boy and Kris days pa. Ako, naniniwala ako na siguro naging close kami for a reason. Na wala namang nagplano, o nagpa-date sa amin o ano. Naging close lang kami na hindi namin alam kung pano kami naging close. Alam mo yun, yung parang gano'n na lang. Parang mystery lang," he says when asked how they became close.
However, GB said that their relationship is still in its early stages. "So, 'andon pa lang kami sa we're still getting to know each other stage pa. Pero sa maikling panahon, masasabi ko na sana ito na yung huli ko rin."
The TV and movie director also says that Candy is making him happy in a lot of ways.
"Sa lahat ng bagay... Nandiyan siya kapag kumbaga kailangan ko ng taong makakausap, kailangan ko ng makakasama. Basta masayang kasama si Candy."
GB separated from Maristel Sampedro, his ex-wife and Kyla's manager, three years ago. Candy, on the other hand, is also separated from her ex-husband, Gilbert Alvarado, with whom she has a son.
Asked about Candy's three-year-old son, Quentin, the director says that the boy calls him "Tito GB."
In Candy's blog in PEP, she referred to Direk GB as her ICF (it's complicated friend). The comedienne did not name him but she did include his picture in her entry titled Batang Kalye. Direk GB's directorial debut, Astig, is one of the ten full-length films competing in the 2009 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.
CANDY'S "IGOROT" JOKE. Two months ago, Candy incurred the ire of the Igorot community following her remark, "Tao po ako, hindi po ako Igorot," in a show in Baguio. When this happened, Direk GB never left Candy's side and tried his best to console her. (Click here to read related article.)
GB says, "Ako, lagi ko lang sinasabi sa kanya, as long as wala kang ginawang masama. Lahat 'yan maaayos din. Kasi hindi naman siya magsasabi ng masama sa ibang tao. Napakabait na tao niyang si Candy. Alam ko wala siyang intensiyong masama do'n.
"Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanya, 'Maaayos din 'yan dahil, in the first place, wala ka namang intensiyong masama. Nagkataong may sinabi kang na-misinterpret, iba yung dating. Pero alam mo naman sa puso mo na wala kang mini-mean na masama.' And ayun nga, naayos na nga."
