"I don't feel any pressure to go with the designer brands. I'm not really particular with brands; it's more of the look of the item." The confession from Carla Abellana makes it apt that her very first cover for a glossy magazine is the Cheap and Chic special of Preview magazine this August.
Editor-in-chief Pauline Suaco-Juanpoints out, "She is decked out in the basics: a white tank, jeans, a gray V-neck sweater, a classic white button-down-the kinds of clothes you and I already have in our wardrobes." With the proper styling, these inexpensive basics take on a "Parisian it girl edge"—perfect for Carla, who is also being touted as this season's It Girl.
Despite having showbiz in her genes—her maternal grandmother is Delia Razon, while her father is Rey "PJ" Abellana—Carla never had any inclination to join show business.
"Ever since I was very young, I've been offered already to do Ang TV, to do movies with Bong Revilla, and we would always turn them down," she says. "But it keeps knocking on our doors. So baka naman it's really meant for me, baka namanGod really wants me to try it out."
Perhaps, without even knowing it, Carla was holding out for the perfect role—the title role in Rosalinda. As a showbiz newbie given a lead role, the pressure is on for Carla, and she knows it.
"There was definitely a lot of pressure to look good, to sound good, to be good, to do well with others," she says. "There were times prior to taping that I wouldn't get to sleep at all. I'd pray so hard and I'd have panic attacks at home."
Panic attacks not withstanding, Carla is ready to take on her biggest challenge yet.
"I've always been scared and very careful of the decisions I make, but when I talked to my mom and my dad and lola about showbiz, they said that I'm young, I should just enjoy everything, all the blessings that come my way. It's too early to be too serious about life. I don't want to be scared anymore."
