A feeling of déjà vu enveloped model-actress KC Concepcion the moment she arrived in Paris a few months ago.
KC lived in Paris for four years (2003-2007) while completing her college education at the American University of Paris, where she took up International Corporate Communications, minor in Theater Arts.
The daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and '80s matinee idol Gabby Concepcion decided to return home after graduation to pursue show business.
Two years after leaving Paris, KC made her return—this time as an actress—to shoot the Filipino remake of the popular Korean series Lovers in Paris for ABS-CBN.
STUDENT TO ACTRESS. "Nung bumalik ako, hindi na ako estudyante. Dati I took three jobs nung nandun ako. When I was living there, akala ng mga tao pinapadalhan ako ng parents ko. Pero hindi talaga. Hindi ko hawak 'yong pera ko and hindi nila ko pinapadalhan except for my needs lang, like rent," KC reminisced during the launching of her personally designed line of hooded sweatshirts for Bayo yesterday, Sept. 8.
The event was staged at Eastwood Mall in Libis, Quezon City. Proceeds of the special collection will go directly to the United Nations World Food Programme for its campaign against hunger and malnutrition.
KC remarked on the stark contrast of her life now compared to her carefree college years: "This time, two years na 'kong nagtatrabaho dito [sa Pilipinas], hawak ko na 'yong pera ko and nakakapag-shopping na 'ko!"
But more than the commercial appeal of the favorite tourist destination, KC regards Paris as the place where she made her important life decisions.
She said in hindsight, "Doon ako nagdesisyon na subukan ang pelikula at gumawa ng teleserye. Never in my wildest dreams na naisip ko na makakabalik ako [to Paris] for my work."
And ever since she reached that decision, KC had done two movies: For The First Time (2008) and When I Met You (2009). She also appeared in various shows like Maalaala Mo Kaya and May Bukas Pa, aside from appearing in her own TV anthology titled I Am KC.
WORKING IN PARIS. For her upcoming series, KC proudly said that the local adaptation of Lovers in Paris will highlight the city's various sceneries and locations.
"We tried to cover good views of the city as much as we could. Para naman makita ng mga Pinoy ang hitsura ng Paris... Para makapag-sightseeing ang mga Pilipino na manonood."
KC plays the role of lead female character Vivian—a simple but spunky girl brimming with optimism. Playing her love interest is Piolo Pascual, who will portray the role of a rich executive named Carlo.
As expected, the production team consciously injected local flavor so as not to alienate the Filipino viewers. KC too had to tweak her characterization significantly to fit the typical Pinay mold.
"We were blessed that they gave us a freedom to do a Pinoy Vivien kasi Pinoys are more dramatic and more expressive, in general. The story is almost the same, we changed some parts, pero 'yong timpla niya, panlasang Pinoy talaga."
Despite the enticing location, the entire cast and production team buckled down to to finish the work and cover all the expenses shelled out by the network to complete the Paris scenes.
"It's really just work," KC pointed out. "Hindi tulad dito na ang daming tao, then ang laki ng crew. It's really just work since wala namang may kilala sa amin dun. Kokonti lang kaming mga pumunta, so mas mabilis ang trabaho kasi tuloy-tuloy and we are all focused."
