"Naghahanda talaga ako by working out. I have to look fit para magmukhang presentable talaga. I really have to prepare kasi first time ko to play the lead role," says Gian Magdangal.

Medyo mabigat ang role na na-assign sa akin dito, and I am really very excited and really preparing hard for it.

Naghahanda talaga ako by working out. I have to look fit para magmukhang presentable talaga. I really have to prepare kasi first time ko to play the lead role.

"And another thing is, wala naman talaga ako kilala na may AIDS, but I have been asking around, kasi my character involves someone who is into a relationship na namatay sa AIDS. 'Tapos my character also has AIDS. It's a very sensitive topic, kaya gusto ko talaga ito gawan ng character study," pahayag pa ni Gian.

"Like in my past plays naman," dagdag pa niya, "I've always wanted to be responsible as an actor and give an effective message, maitawid kaagad ang mensahe ng play nang maliwanag."

FIRST TO PLAY LEAD. First time ni Gian na magbibida sa isang musical play bagama't nakalabas na siya sa Footloose kung saan nagbida naman sina Jay-R at Iya Villania.

"Ito talaga yung first time na magbibida ako talaga, kasi lahat naman ng ibang roles ko dati sa theater ay support. Puro support roles ang napupunta sa akin like in West Side Story [kung saan bida sina Karylle at Christian Bautista], and Footloose with Jay-R and Iya as lead actors. I got lucky to get the lead part [in Rent].

I am not saying na hindi mahirap ang ibang roles na nagampanan ko before, pero this one is particularly hard to do.

Six weeks na silang nagre-rehearse since the final cast was announced last November. Pukpukan daw talaga ang ensayo nila from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, pero hindi naman daw naapektuhan ang iba niyang trabaho like his hosting job sa SOP.

She's also inviting friends na manood.

Maybe there is something else in store for her.

RENT RUN. 9 Works Theatrical's new production Rent will open this year's local musical theater scene on February 6 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize, Rent with book, music and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, has made a lasting mark on Broadway with songs that rock and a story that resonates.
