PEP EXCLUSIVE: Gabby Concepcion still entertains idea of going back to the U.S.

"Mahirap ang pelikula ngayon, sabi nga nila, bagsak... Hindi tulad noon na kampante ka. Iba na ngayon, e," Gabby Concepcion confided to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a recent interview.

Actor Gabby Concepcion is still quite open to being paired with ex-wife Sharon Cuneta despite the latter's initial objection for fear that working together would only resurrect old pains and issues once the publicity mill starts rolling.

In an interview last March 5, Gabby told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that he finds "nothing wrong" should they work together again to fulfill the clamor of their fans.

"As long as [Sharon's] family would discuss it and everybody's okay with it, then let's come up with a really nice movie that everyone will enjoy," continued Gabby.

Two years since he returned to resume his showbiz career, fans of the Gabby-Sharon tandem are still hoping to see the ex-couple together through any means possible. Their last movie together was Tayong Dalawa in 1992.

Hopes were high during Sharon's 44th birthday concert at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, last January 12, especially after past intimates Richard Gomez and Robin Padilla graced the occasion.

Gabby's participation, however, was limited to a taped segment showing him merrily dancing to the tune of "I Got A Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas.

"Okay na 'yong kinunan ako ng video," smiled Gabby when we asked him about it. "Hindi naman kailangan talagang magpunta in person. Kumbaga, masyado nang OA 'yon na dumating pa ko dun, and besides I was working."

NOTHING'S CERTAIN. At 45, Gabby said he's grateful for being given another crack at show business. He's also aware that all the fame and accolades could be gone as fast as he earned them back.

"Sa negosyong ito, you're only good as your last movie," he said. "Kaya nga sa tuwing matatapos ang teleserye o pelikula, kinakabahan ka na naman kung may project ka ba ulit."

Gabby dismissed the notion that he had it easy since resuming his acting career. It was actually more difficult now compared to the past where movie projects were easily given to actors in quick succession. The sudden change in trend is largely attributed to the decline of local films being produced and the boom of television as a certified medium for entertainment.

"Iba na ngayon, e," agreed Gabby. "Naghintay ako ng eight months bago ulit ako nabigyan ng project [after the series, Iisa Pa Lamang], so kinakabahan na rin ako. Kararating ko lang and hindi ko alam kung mabibigyan pa ako ng project.

"Kaya sabi ko, kung di ako mabigyan ulit, babalik na lang ako ng America. Kasi ang buhay para sa akin, walang katiyakan. I take it one day at a time, hindi tulad noong araw."

Showbiz may look glitzy and lucrative to some people. But not for Gabby who experienced how it is to be idolized. This good-looking, talented actor has options other than showbiz, having had to work his way up as a real-estate agent abroad.

"Mas maraming koneksyon ang kailangan mo dito to get where you are. Well, hindi ko naman sinasabi na laging ganun parati," said Gabby. "At least para sa akin kasi, naranasan ko na rin na mas madali doon [U.S.] maghanap ng trabaho kaya ganun ang feeling ko. Nasanay na din kasi ako doon, ang skills ko nandoon because I'm a broker there. Pumasa na ako sa exam, may certificate na ako, so may achievement na ako doon."

Nonetheless, Gabby appreciates the rare privilege of enjoying and excelling in two diverse careers.

"Puro pagpapasalamat ang ginagawa ko," he said. "I have nothing to complain but everything to thank for kasi hindi ko ine-expect na magkakaroon pa ako ng career pagbalik ko dito."

ATE GUY. With Superstar Nora Aunor about to make a comeback after years of staying abroad, Gabby couldn't help but be reminded of his own journey back home in 2008, particularly the excitement and reservations he felt then.

"Why not?" replied Gabby, when asked for his opinion on Nora's much anticipated return to showbiz. "Kung ako binigyan ng chance mag-comeback...everybody deserves a second round."
