Stand-up comedian and TV host Vice Ganda is only a few days away from his solo major concert titled May Nag-Text... 'Yung Totoo... Vice Ganda Sa Araneta, which will be held on May 15 at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
Staging a comedy-musical show in the Big Dome is a rarity in the local concert scene and only Ai-Ai delas Alas was able to successfully pull off such a feat in 2007.
"Actually, ayaw niya [Vice] and when we went to Canada for a show, kinulit-kulit ko si Ogie [Diaz, Vice's manager], kahit madaling-araw nagte-text ako. Naniniwala naman ako and it's about time na after Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai, may mag-Araneta naman and this time lalake," concert producer Joed Serrano said at a press conference held yesterday, May 3, at Max's restaurant along Shaw Blvd. in Mandaluyong City.
Vice initially suggested doing the event in a smaller venue like the Aliw Theater, but the team behind the concert was adamant until the Showtime resident judge finally relented to Joed's wishes.
CHOKELEIT BACKS OUT. Vice is very involved in the planning and production details of his upcoming concert. The challenge is for him to muster that intimate vibe common in small comedy bars and effectively channel it inside a huge coliseum.
The show will feature the veteran stand-up comic dishing out fresh spiels, jokes and antics either solo or together with his interesting lineup of guests.
Joining Vice for the concert are colleagues Pooh and Ethel Booba along with Kuya Kim Atienza, Jhong Hilario of Streetboys, Jon Avila, Callalily's Kean Cipriano, Queen of Soul Jaya, and Concert Queen Pops Fernandez.
"Si Pooh 'tsaka si Ethel, okrayan to the max, first time, walang script," he excitedly revealed. "Kasi mas nakakatawa 'yong ginagawa namin pag walang script. Pag may sinusundan kaming script, napapa-flop kami."
Vice was saddened, however, by the decision of fellow stand-up comic Chokeleit to skip the concert to supposedly give way to another commitment.
Ganito 'yong date.'
Vice added that Chokeleit gave his nod even to the producers as acknowledgement of his participation in the concert before withdrawing suddenly.
DEFENDING KEAN. Vice defended Callalily vocalist Kean Cipriano against the string of negative press apparently brought about by his "rough attitude" in facing questions concerning his past romantic involvement with Kapuso talent Arci Muñoz.
Kean and Vice worked together before in Showtime before the young rocker joined another station to pursue an acting career.
"Sa pagkakakilala ko sa kanya, Kean is a very sweet guy.
PLAYING PETRA. Aside from concert rehearsals and TV hosting, Vice will also start shooting for his launching film under Viva Films. Vice was picked to play lead in the modern remake of Roderick Paulate's old film, Petrang Kabayo.
Vice's first shooting day for the said movie project is today, May 4.
Vice believes that his upcoming solo concert will serve as a good prelude to Petrang Kabayo.
"Maganda kasi patatawin ko sila rito [the concert].
