DJ Mo Twister says his transfer to TV5 from GMA-7 has opened a lot of doors for him.
"In GMA-7, I only had a segment in one program. Now, I get to host... I'm a main host for two shows and I have a very good segment for Willing Willie. Sobrang laking opportunity. So, it's nice to be here on TV5!" DJ Mo said in an interview following a hosting job for "Ariel's Experts vs 100" event earlier, October 26, at the Teatrino, Greenhills, in San Juan City.
Aside from Willing Willie, DJ Mo also appears as one of the hosts of the daily and weekly entertainment programs Juicy! and Paparazzi, respectively.
"It's really every day, Sunday to Sunday," he said about his workload.
But what got DJ Mo even more excited about being a "kapatid"—which is the tagline chosen by TV5—was when he was tapped to be Willie Revillame's co-host on Willing Willie.
He said, "I just had a lucky opportunity from Willie to have a segment there, and it's a way na pwede akong matuto from the best. It's a great way that I learn from the best, si Willie, and at the same time, get the exposure that a Willie Revillame show gives. Sobrang dami ng tao na nanonood, at alam ko na medyo happy sila sa ratings ng first episode even last night."
He also looks forward to TV5's plan to reach out to an international audience by 2011.
The TV and radio personality said, "I know that in-announce na rin ni Willie na, starting January, magiging international na rin ang TV5. Sabi ni Willie na magwo-world tour pa ang Willing Willie.
"So, that'll mean that the future is so bright para sa show, para sa station. It's just, to be part of it and Willie saying that he wants me to be part of the program— sobrang [masaya]."
In less than a week of working with the former noontime show host, DJ Mo said that he already witnessed Willie's generosity to his audience and to his staff.
He related, "Well, I've studied him, siguro 'yong pagiging overly generous niya. Nakita ko naman ang generosity niya sa tao, sa masa, basta sa lahat, sa contestants. Hindi lang 'yong mga taong tinutulungan niya on TV, pero 'yong off cam.
"Doon ako medyo nagulat, sobrang generous niya sa staff members. I don't know if I'm allowed to say what he's giving to the staff. I don't know, I think it's something that he wants to keep to himself. Pero nakita ko with my own eyes the way he was with them, lahat sila may big something from Willie. That's the biggest generosity move that I've ever seen."
[PEP thinks DJ Mo was referring to the 25 brand new Toyota Vios units that Willie very recently distributed to 25 Willing Willie staffers. Willie told PEP last October 21, when the website team watched his dress rehearsals in Studio A of TV5, that this was his way of giving thanks.
["Biro mo," he said, "sumama sila sa akin, ang tatagal na nila sa ABS-CBN, kahit alam nilang wala akong show noon. Wala talaga. Basta sabi nila, 'Sa iyo kami, Kuya.' Eto naman ang pag-thank you ng Wil Productions sa kanila."]
According to Mo, this negates the bad writeups about the former Kapamilya host. Most of these say Willie is just "mayabang."
"No. That's what's difficult with people who are witty and funny," he defended Willie.
"'Yong medyo hirit niya on air, di ba, can be mistaken as something like that. But in the end, he's just having fun. It's a fun show! He's the best at what he does and he's very generous."
"BOY LAGLAG." Meanwhile, DJ Mo explained away his growing reputation as a fellow who puts even his own co-hosts on the spot.
In a previous interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Mo's co-hosts on Juicy! gave him the monicker "Boy Laglag," because of his penchant for revealing personal information about his co-workers, especially on Paparazzi.
Recently, he disclosed on national television that Ruffa was still getting phone calls from her former "special friend," John Lloyd Cruz. This caused another unpleasant stir between the actress and the Kapamilya actor. (CLICK HERE to read related article)
"It's my job," he said with an unapologetic smile.
"It's part of our, hindi naman ng formal segment ng Paparazzi, pero parang expected na 'yon. May baon tayong mga tsismis tungkol sa isa't isa. It's just one of those things, that we always have to look behind our back because maybe even our co-host could make us laglag. Pero okay lang 'yon. They know me.
"Dati, hinabol niya ako at si Rhian [Ramos, the GMA-7 star rumored to be Mo's girlfriend] with picture-picture. So, in the end, I go out and do something crazy and take a lot of pictures in the end. It's a lot of fun that becomes major intrigue, you know, like Ruffa and John Lloyd. It's part of our job, it's part of our industry."
Does Ruffa get mad at him for using her as a subject?
DJ Mo said not at all. "You know, araw-araw niya akong tine-text, araw-araw niya akong tinatawagan. Ruffa and I have become very close. I mean, I've known Ruffa for 15 years. We've been friends, as in the closest we've ever been, as in araw-araw talaga we talk."
He added, "Ruffa Gutierrez is always in the center of a lot of controversies. That's my job. So, it's nice to see us as a channel as a growing entertainment option."
He pointed this out as one of the reasons the two TV5 entertainment shows are getting more followers.
"You know, Paparazzi and Juicy! are both doing very, very well. Ang Juicy! nare-replay na sa gabi rin, so medyo we're very happy about that. Paparazzi last Sunday ay napapansin na rin kasi marami nang commercial load at medyo tumataas na ang ratings and stuff like that," DJ Mo said.
When PEP asked DJ Mo for an update about the breach-of-contract case filed by GMA-7 against him, the normally voluble host said the case is ongoing but did not elaborate. (CLICK HERE to read related article)
STILL ON MAGIC FM. Although DJ Mo's career time is loaded with TV projects, he has not left his first job as a radio jock on Magic 89.9.
After working as a disc jockey from as early as his teen years, DJ Mo now observes that many things have changed about being a DJ.
For example, he said, "It's nice to make a good living doing radio because radio is known to be as not very lucrative job compared to TV. Pero as sumisikat na ang radio, parang tumataas na ang sweldo, parang you can use it as your career.
"Dati parang kapag DJ, kailangan mong mag-sideline. Now, with radio being powerful again, you can live off it. It's something that I'm happy about and maswerte lang ako na may TV lang ako."
Apart from beefing up TV5's programs, the Kapatid network management also has plans to popularize its radio counterpart, 103.5 Wow FM. This was formerly known as Max FM.
Is DJ Mo also transferring to this FM station?
DJ Mo replied, "I'm still on Magic. I started on Magic as a teenager and I wanna retire as a DJ with Magic."
