Director Mark Reyes heaps praises on Bagets young stars; explains directive to bar parents on the set

"They have to realize that this is a one-shot deal, they should be appreciative and do their best," Bagets director Mark Reyes advises the young stars of the modern remake of the iconic coming-of-age film.

"The difficult part is, I have to be honest, they’re [the current cast members] all neophytes when it comes to acting. But they are all eager to learn and they’re learning quickly like all kids are.

"What scares us is that—and that’s probably the reason why we’re all really focus in what we’re doing—is because of the legacy of Bagets," bungad ni Direk Mark nang makapanayam ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), at iba pang reporters sa special screening na ginanap kagabi, May 12, sa Podium Mall sa Ortigas, Pasig City.

"Especially for my generation and the generation before me, it’s like the Holy Grail of teen-oriented movies. It became a cultural phenomenon.

"Siguro, bias aside, it was only T.G.I.S that was able to like half-equate what Bagets were able to do.

"But nothing has struck a chord like Bagets," pagpapatuloy ni Direk Mark.

"When I was given the offer, and I was in between contracts naman with GMA-7 at that time, and it was Boss Vic [del Rosario, Viva Entertainment Inc., executive] who is kumbaga my father figure when it comes to my career, I was scared and excited at the same time.

"Excited and scared na parang if I screw this up, it’s the Bagets legacy that’s on the line."

TAKING CARE OF THE LEGACY.

"I wanted them to watch it after we’ve worked. I didn’t want them to stereotype the original Bagets.

"Nagtrabaho muna kami and then nung meron na silang sense of their characters, ’Now, panoorin ninyo ang Bagets!’" tugon niya.

"Once we do something, ang palaging naiisip natin is yung Bagets nung 1980s, na dapat pag napanood nila yung pilot episode, sasabihin na nila agad, ’Okay, it’s Bagets!" pahayag ni Direk Mark.

"When Cheska saw the pilot... She was the first one to see it kasi, she said, ’You got it. You just have to develop it all throughout.’"

Patuloy ni Direk Mark, "At the end of the day, without the pranks, without the love story, the show represents the group dynamics here in the Philippines.

"Di ba, una pamilya mo, then ang sunod mong tatakbuhan, barkada mo?"

GENERATION GAP.

"Iba yung generation nila Bobby Andrews [of T.G.I.S] and iba din yung generation na ito.

"Yung sigaw, it makes them more nervous in their acting. But if you talk to them like an adult, and you tell them the right direction, and you tell them that it’s okay to make mistakes, then they do better," paliwanag niya.

PARENTS OFF LIMITS.

"There was an issue that came out, well hindi naman issue, in PEP na, ’Pinagbawalan ni Direk Mark ang parents sa Tween Hearts set,’ which also here in Bagets, bawal din sila," pag-amin niya.

"Only because I cannot treat this person in front of me as a professional if I know that he’s going to run to his mother and say, ’Hindi ako binigyan ng close-up ni Direk.’

"You know, they have to focus, they have to be professional instead of [being] children on the set and there only need to be one parent on the set, and that’s me.

"Yun lang ’yon, and people parang made a big issue out of it. Sabi ko, ’C’mon, it’s not!’

"It’s just that I learned that sometimes the bagets [young stars] are okay, the cast is okay, and it’s the parents who are like passionate about something," paliwanag ni Direk Mark.

"But today, the parents came to me and they are thanking me. They realize now that, ’We know our children are in good hands. Sige, Direk, thank you.’"
