Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino explains why she got emotional after winning at the Asian Film Awards

Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino says that big and meaty roles come from the independent films. She says, “We look at independent cinema to give us really meaty roles.

“I’m so proud! And it’s such a privilege na makilala sa ibang bansa.

“At masabi na they prefer my acting performance to those from Japan, China, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

“Actually, naiyak ako no’ng tinanggap ko yung award. Kasi parang… I felt so blessed.

“Akala ko kasi no’ng tumigil ako sa pag-arte para sa pamilya ko… medyo parang hanggang do’n na lang iyon.

“’Tapos parang… alam ko, magaling ako!” sabay tawa niya.

“Oo, alam kong magaling ako!

“Pero parang I gave that up really to raise my family.

“Siyempre kasi parang I couldn’t break it to the mainstream showbusiness.

“And I needed to earn money fast.

“So I went instead to advertising.

“So, parang ito [award] it’s such a blessing from the Lord.

“Kaya I was so emotional when I received the award.”

UNEXPECTED WIN.

“Yes! I did not expect to win.

I thought I wasn’t going to win," sabi ni Shamaine.

“This is just my fourth award… My first was from Cinema One, best actress award yun for Prinsesa—that was in 2007.

“Then Cinemalaya last year as Best Supporting actress for Niño.

“And then this one from Asian Films Awards.

“Fourth ay yung sa Golden Screen Awards [best supporting actress also for Niño]."

Patuloy pa ni Shamaine, “Ang independent films lang naman talaga ang nagbibigay sa amin ng bigger roles—those not coming from the mainstream.

“We look at independent cinema to give us really meaty roles.

“But of course, sa mainstream at sa television, iyon talaga ang pinanggagalingan ng income ng most actors.”

INFLUENCE.

“Oo, napakalaki! Noni is my personal coach!” tawa ni Shamaine.

“We discuss roles. We discuss choices.

Malaking tulong talaga.

“At saka inspirasyon ko ang asawa ko.”

For the record, ilang years na ba siya sa acting profession?

“Uhm… matagal na. Kasi nag-aral ako sa Philippine High School For The Arts.

“Scholar ako ng bayan… ni Madame Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

“So I took up Theater Arts sa high school. Tapos sa college din, I took up Theater Arts.

“’Tapos si Uge [Eugene Domingo], nagpang-abot pa kami... na I think we did two productions together.

“Siguro at this point, I’m giving more time to my career.

“In fact, that’s the reason why sunud-sunod yung parang naging theater production ko.

“And then I said, I’ll really give time to my acting career this time.

“Kasi medyo malalaki na yung mga bata.

“Yung youngest ko is already twelve years old. Yung eldest ko naman is twenty-one.

“She’s a graduate already. Sumasayaw siya at kumakanta—nasa musical theater siya ngayon.

“Yung mga anak ko, apat sila, they’ve all acted before. Mostly in independent films and theater.

“Pero pag-aaral muna kasi.”

DON’T STOP BELIEVING.

“Huwag silang tumigil.

“Kasi in my case, tumigil nga ako for a while… binalikan ko pa rin.

“And then, you really never stop learning.

“Like, parang in my case, I always see it as… you’re only as good as your last project.

“So, you’re always trying to learn.

“Especially when you get difficult roles, that’s the best time to learn,” sabi ni Shamaine.
