It was young, crazy love that transpired between Kris Aquino and Robin Padilla about two decades ago.
Back then, however, circumstances did not allow the love affair of the then-presidential daughter of Corazon Aquino and the “Bad Boy of Philippine Movies” to endure.
Would their romance have lasted until today should they have fought for their relationship 21 years ago?
At the premiere screening and grand press conference of ABS-CBN’s latest primetime soap Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw yesterday, January 13, 2013, at the Trinoma mall in Quezon City, Kris and Robin answered the unavoidable question differently.
Kris said, “Kung nung bata kami, at this point, na-annul na kami.
“Pero kung let’s say ngayon lang kami nagkakilala at ganito na yung level of maturity namin, may chance pa siguro.”
Robin thinks otherwise. He stated, “Hindi kami maa-annul! Hanggang ngayon, kami pa rin.
The action star then dramatically turned to Kris, who was seated to his left, “Hindi kita pakakawalan, pero pinakawalan mo kasi ako, e!”
As the two formidable personalities in the industry star in the Kapamilya channel’s latest teleserye, their affair now stands as a thing of the past—something they both freely talk and laugh about.
Asked if they felt awkward around each other when they started taping for the said project, Robin said, “Hindi puwedeng maramdaman ng isang lalaki ang awkward, lalo na si Ms. Kris ang kaeksena.
“Hindi kailan man… makakaapekto sa akin yung nakalipas dahil napakaganda naman ng nakalipas namin, na parte ng buhay ko…
“Wow. Fairy tale sa akin yun!”
The 43-year-old action star teasingly added, “Kaya lahat yun, baon ko yun! Tuwing pupunta ako sa taping, lagi akong excited… tuwing magdadampi ang aming mga kamay, ang aming mga tingin.
“E, maraming naglalaro sa aking mga isipan.”
Kris, who played along with Robin’s antics, meanwhile remarked, “Walang awkwardness at all.”
The talk show host/actress pointed out that her onscreen team-up with Robin says something about their now mature and professional relationship.
“Sa pananaw ko, yung characterization namin dun sa [teleserye], as we watch it, as it progresses, it’s a couple na matagal na ang pinagsamahan…
"And siguro naging kumportable talaga kami sa isa’t isa and nagbibigayan kami kaya walang problema at all.”
ON ANNE CURTIS AND ROBIN PADILLA. Kris, Robin, and Anne Curtis figure in a love triangle in Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw.
As the plot unfolds during the first two weeks of the soap, it is Ruth and Bogs, Anne’s and Robin’s characters, who will develop an unlikely, exciting romance.
In the story, Ruth is a happy-go-lucky, family rebel who aspires to be a top fashion model. She is also the younger sister of the family-devoted and over-achiever Roxanne, Kris’s character.
Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw’s major conflict arises after Ruth leaves behind Bogs to pursue her modelling career in New York and during which period, Roxanne and Bogs develop feelings for each other and enter a serious relationship.
In an interview, post-press conference proper, Kris expressed her joy about working with Anne and Robin.
The 41-year-old actress, said of her co-actress, “You know, kay Anne kasi, I’m sure you noticed it doon na parang yung rapport namin is just so natural.
“Parang nagkukuwentuhan lang kami at parang kaming dalawa lang talaga at kung ano kami sa totoong buhay.”
Kris, who has shared a nine-yearold friendship with the Annebisyosa star, relayed how proud she is of her onscreen sister, “In so many ways, I’m so proud of how far Anne has matured.
“In fact, I always tell her na lahat ng na-achieve niya at her age, hindi ko na-achieve…
“Sabi ko, it took me this age that I am right now, na naipundar ko lahat nang naipundar na niya at nagagawa lahat ng nagawa na niya para sa pamilya niya.”
As far as working with their leading man is concerned, Kris could not be any more pleased.
The actress commended Robin for being the actor that he is today: “He has the perfect memory, he’s always in character, he’s there one hundred percent talaga kaya dumadali ang trabaho pag siya ang kasama.”
The Kris TV host likewise said that their team-up at the moment is timely.
“Sobrang laking blessing na, at this point in our lives, na malawak na ang pag-unawa namin sa buong mundo kami nagkatrabaho, kasi nabubuksan ang mata ko sa pananaw ng iba.”
She further said, “Kasi very idealistic pa si Robin talaga sa pananaw niya, sa mundo, sa buhay, sa religion, sa mga tao na siguro, ako, dahil nga sa mundo ng pulitika, kailangan laging nako-compromise ka at nagiging peacemaker ka, at nagri-reach out ka, sana as little conflict as possible.
“Nabubuksan talaga ang pag-iisip ko no’n dahil sa kanya at marami kaming naging mahabang diskusyon na about so many topics—from bilibid, our penal system, the peace accord, hanggang Amerika, hanggang pagpunta niya sa Iran.
“Lahat napag-usapan na namin.
“So, there’s never a dull moment sa set kasi parati kaming on our toes. Kasi kailangan namin panindigan yung mga ipinaglalaban namin.”
THEN AND NOW. Inquired to elaborate on what Robin revealed during the press conference proper that it was she who dumped the actor in past, Kris said, “Siguro kasi masyado akong selosa to be with somebody like Robin Padilla.
“Hindi siguro kakayanin ng ego ko rin. Hindi ko kaya and I always tell na in working with him now, sumobrang bilib ako sa pagbibigay ni Mariel [Rodriqguez] sa kanya.
“Yung talagang sobrang one hundred percent support sa kanya as a wife.
"Sinabi ko, ’Ako, hindi ko kakayanin ‘yan!’”
Should TV5 host Mariel, Robin’s wife, feel jealous over Kris’s rekindled onscreen romance with the action star?
Kris dismissed the idea.
“Parang wala siyang dapat ikaselos talaga kasi apart from work, we don’t hang-out…
“[I’m] careful about boundaries and demarcation line and kung ano lang yung dapat na pag-usapan.
“Pati yung pagte-text at pagtawag, maingat na maingat ako na only if it’s really necessary and important.”
ATE BALLSY BECOMES KRIS’S PEG. Kris’s character, Roxanne, resembles the talk show host’s eldest sister, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, in Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw.
Like Ballsy, Roxanne is the eldest child in the family, as well as the person who pacifies family members in conflict with on another.
During the interview, when Kris was asked how it felt portraying the enduring “Ate” of the soap, the actress immediately remarked how challenging it was.
“Ang hirap talaga! Pero iniisip ko ang sarili ko as my ate kasi siya talaga yung peacemaker.”
Kris shared a fact, “Actually, nung pine-present nila ito, ang peg daw talaga nila, ako si Ballsy, si Anne si Kris!"
While playing Roxanne, did it cross her mind that she would have rather been her Ate Ballsy in real life?
Kris reacted, “No! No! No, no, no. I love being the youngest!”
She explained, “I love them. Spoiled talaga ako sa kanila talaga.
“And ano talaga, parang yung sobrang ganda nung relationship namin.
"Kasi now, they accept that I’m a grown up and I’m mature, but I’ll always be their baby.”
The actress said that she likes spoiling her three older sisters—Ballsy, Pinky Aquino-Abellada, and Viel Aquin-Dee—in return.
“Kasi yun puwede ko sila i-spoil pag may commercial ako, nag-aabot ako ng money.
“Pag bibiyahe sila, aabutan ko ng [pocket money], yun. And parang natutuwa sila.
“Proud sila. Ikinukuwento nila sa lahat na bigay ni Krissy, ganun.
“Kasi yun… because before, when I was young, ako naman ini-i-spoil nila. So now, it’s my turn to be able to spoil them.”
DO EVERYTHING NOW. What drives Kris to be on top of her game at present?
It is rather admirable that the Queen of All Media, whose Metro Manila Film Festival entry Sisterekas clinched the highest-grossing Filipino film of all-time, still manages to be TV host, regularly tape for this soap, and be a mother to her kids Joshua and Bimby.
“Because life is short and my career is short,” Kris commented.
“Yung I always have that mindset na this can all go away tomorrow. So, bakit hindi ko iga-grab ang chance na ito?"
Smiling, she mused, “And this is the only time that Robin, Anne, and I can be in a project like this na parang hindi far-fetched.
“Hindi n’yo sasabihin na, ‘Ano ba ’yan? Trying hard naman yung mga ’yan!’ So parang totoo sa kung sino kami ngayon.
“Kaya gustung-gusto ko talaga and kinaya ko…”
3 TO 5 YEARS MORE. In a recent interview, Kris revealed that she will soon be retiring from showbiz three to five years from now.
This the actress expounded on: “Honestly, kasi may nagsabi sa akin [to] set a number in your head and when you reach that number, then know that you can retire.
“Kasi, parang ayoko talagang umalis na ayaw na akong panoorin.”
Kris stressed how lucky she is that every project she does at the moment, delivers.
“Yung ginagawa ko nagre-rate, nagbabayad ang mga tao ng pera. So parang know when to go…”
She finally told of what she truly wants in life:
“Hindi naman siguro selfishness na sabihin na at some point in my life, gusto ko naman rin malagay sa isang happy, peaceful, content, and lasting marriage.
“And I know that can only happen kung hindi na ito yung trabaho ko.”
