The mood was light and spontaneous at the press conference held earlier today, January 28, and was hosted by TV5’s Good Morning Club for Edu Manzano, the latest addition to its roster of hosts.
One of the tasks the Kapatid star was asked to do: “Siraan nga natin ang mga co-hosts mo…”
And he gamely described the ladies, stressing, “Joke lang, ha.”
He said animatedly, “Yung si Amy Perez? Hay naku, kung alam mo lang, napakalakas manigarilyo. At ako, kutob ko lang, nagda-drugs…”
“Si Tintin Bersola, may boteng vodka sa likod. Hindi mo maamoy… Ayokong magsalita pero andami nilang problema ni Julius.”
“Si Chiqui Roa, parating may foil. Ang tawag sa kanya, batak. Chiquing Batak.”
The small group that gathered around him roared with laughter.
Even when he himself brought up his previous issue with Grace Lee, he was smiling.
It can be recalled that on March 21, his Twitter account @RealEduManzano posted: "PNoy and Grace Lee spotted at Promenade Greenhills today. In the middle of the day. To be fair, it IS a nice day for a leisurely stroll."
The President's camp was quick to issue a statement. Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda tweeted: “Ur tweet is tsismis. The President is presiding over a NEDA Board meeting. It started at 10, the meeting is still ongoing.”
The account retracted what was posted earlier: "Pnoy was NOT in Promenade with Grace Lee today. It was unconfirmed gossip, and I was overeager. I deserve all the backlash. Lesson learned..."
At the presscon, Edu revealed how he cleared the air with Grace.
“She was reading a book. I was reading the papers ‘tapos it just dawned on me, I put the papers down, ‘I have to explain something to you.’
“‘You know, I never tweeted that you were in Greenhills.’ Ngayon ko lang na-realize [we had that issue]. I was in Hong Kong.
"I did apologize pero inako ko na. By that time, kung magsalita pa ako, mabubuhay uli, e.”
The tweet, he said, was posted by his former administrator, “May nag-tweet sa kanya, he used my iPad.”
When asked what happened to his staff, Edu answered, “He’s no longer the administrator. Na-promote. We moved him to another province.”
And how did Grace react?
“She was very gracious. [She said], ‘Actually, I even tweeted your son [Luis Manzano] because I doubted very much it was you.’”
Going back to his morning show, "empowerment" is the kind of vibe he wants to impart each morning.
He told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “It will start your day feeling empowered— either news or you learn a new trade or a new trick on the street.”
And yes, if he will have to set a new trend again just like the Papaya dance, he said he’ll be more than willing.
“Kung puwede nga lang, e… Kung makakadagdag dun sa ratings, bakit hindi? Ako, ako, handa akong gawin lahat kung kinakailangan.”
HIS LIFE NOW: HOSTING. He became famous in showbiz as a dramatic actor, but since 1985, he’s been hosting.
“Remember Not so Late Night With Edu? Ipinanganak ka na ba nun? That’s where it started.”
Part of his wish list at present is to have a talk show with that similar format.
“Dun ako pinaka-kumportable, e,” Edu added.
After his brief stint on MTB: Ang Saya-Saya between 2004 and 2005, he tried his hand at hosting a game show, where he also made his mark.
How did he do it?
“Kung may science kasi [sa hosting], lahat naging matagumpay na. Kasi kahit sa paggawa ng pelikula, walang formula ‘yan, e. Kahit superstar ka, may mga flop ka rin.
“So the thing is, you have to continue looking for new elements…
“Eventually, there will always be similarity, you know, it’s just that you have to continue evolving it.
“Hindi puwede yung meron kayong mga segments na hindi nagbabago. Pati audiences mo kung minsan also expect na may karagdagang impormasyon.”
Good Morning Club, he said, “demands a different lifestyle, [which] I’m only happy to let go of.
“I also liked the good life, e. So I went out at night with friends.
“But the times na ginagawa ko dati sa ibang morning shows, I always get healthier.
“I’m glad talaga of the chance to work in the morning. Actually, I love it. I became a morning person.
“Na-realize ko kasi kung gaano kasarap yung magising nang maaga. Unang-una, I like to drive. Ang sarap magmaneho sa umaga.
“Before, bago ako pumasok, tatakbo ako sa U.P. Yung oval kasi, pagdating ng umaga iyan, walang sasakyan. So I would run or bike. Then I would go to work.”
HIS LIFE THEN: ACTING.
His reply: “When I was appointed in 2004, tumigil ako talaga. I stopped movies. I didn’t want to be accused, you know, of not doing my work.”
Edu was the first chairman of the Optical Media Board, which was tasked to reduce media piracy.
It’s been a while since showbiz fans saw him act. His last soap was Walang Kapalit in 2007.
The major factor that’s been getting in the way: schedule.
“Totoo ba yung mga cut-off cut-off na iyan? Hindi ko kakayanin siguro. Kasi, I have to be up at 3 o’clock and drive all the way to Novaliches [studio of his morning show]...
“Minsan mas higit pa sa 24 hours yung trabaho… May mga offer sa ‘kin lately, pero kailangan siguro, if I’ll have to do it again, it will have to be special, e.
“Like, I want to do something with my son. Meron kaming naisip ni June [Torrejon, his manager], e.”
Most likely, it’s going to be a comedy film.
Again, Mario Bautista quipped, “Pinag-aagawan niyo si Jennylyn Mercado?”
Jennylyn is the girlfriend of his son Luis.
Edu laughed, “Ang pangit naman! Hindi bagay.”
But he’s open to having an indie film or co-producing one.
This time, in a serious tone, he stated, “I want to do something different.”
Lastly, PEP asked, “Is time, not money, your major consideration now before accepting a project?”
With a big smile, he replied, “I have less money now, but I’m happier.
“You know when you have so much, you don’t know what to do with it, e, and then you just end up throwing it away.”
