PEP EXCLUSIVE: Vin Abrenica talks about being belittled as a newbie actor: “Hirap pa rin daw kami sumabay sa kalaban namin.”

Despite the many things that make Vin Abrenica happy— a supportive family, working on his first soap, and getting good feedback— the Never Say Goodbye star has his lows, too. Asked what, so far, is the worst criticism he got, Vin says, “Hirap daw [kami] sumabay, siyempre… of course, sa kalaban namin. Ang lakas e, dalawa [sila]. Yung mga so far naman na pinaka-worst na naririnig ko [ay] na bago lang kami tapos sumabay kami sa

“Family, work, and myself, kung anong meron ako ngayon, kung anong nakuha ko,” are the things that make Vin Abrenica happy at this point in his career.

The TV5 talent, who emerged the first male winner of reality star search Artista Academy, says that work has been “rewarding.” This stems from the good feedback he is getting for his acting in primetime soap Never Say Goodbye.

The drama series, which also stars Superstar Nora Aunor, Cesar Montano, Alice Dixson, and Gardo Versoza, launched Vin and his Artista Academy female counterpart , Sophie Albert, last February 11.

In a brief one-on-one chat with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last March 16, during TV5’s “Go5! Live sa Araw ng Dabaw” tour in Davao City, the 21-year-old actor talked about how supportive his family has been.

In fact, both his father and his older brother, GMA-7 hunk Aljur Abrenica, are avid viewers of his soap.

“Pinapanood nila kasi nagugustuhan nila kung ano ginagawa ko sa TV. So nafa-flatter ako, nagaganahan ako.

They serve as his critics, too.

While they tell him he acts like a natural, his father is one to say “Anak, ang pangit ng ginawa mo dito” when Vin messes up in a particular scene.

“Si Daddy kasi, mahirap i-ano yun, e… marami kasi expectations Daddy ko.

“So every time na [may] mali siyang [nakikita], sinasabi niya in my face.”

This Vin has learned to accept with a simple retort: “Okay, Dad!” meanwhile taking in the slight blow he gets.

The moreno stud gets more encouragement from his Kuya Aljur.

Vin related, “Sinusubaybayan niya nga yung Never Say Goodbye. Pinapanood niya. Pinaparecord ko para napapanood ko rin. Gusto ko makita. Tapos siya rin pinapanood niya.

“Sabi niya ang ganda raw ng story. Ako nga, pina-fast forward ko. Gusto ko yung mga part ko lang, siyempre pinag-aaralan ko.

“Siya naman, pinapanood niya nang buo. Nag-e-enjoy niyang pinapanood talaga, e!”

WORST CRITICISM. As Vin and Sophie are being built up as one of TV5’s strongest love teams, the two newbies have been getting negative criticism along with the nicer comments.

PEP asked Vin, so far, what is the most upsetting criticism?

He replied, “Yung hirap pa rin kami sumabay.

“Hirap daw sumabay, siyempre… of course, sa kalaban namin. Ang lakas e, dalawa [kasi].”

This is coupled with a blow that he and Sophie are too fresh to be made to compete with the other networks’ teleserye stars.

“So, wala na ako dun. Labas ako dun.”

The actor also mentioned the pressure that he and Sophie feel: “Yung fact na pumasok kami agad sa isang teleserye… Iniisip ko rin na kasama namin mga beteranong artista, pressure na rin yun…”

HONING HIS TALENT. The criticisms are constructive and give Vin the drive to be better. This he proves by allotting his free time for his acting workshop.

The actor said, “Akala ko, matatapos na lahat yung sa Artista Academy, hindi pala.

“During Never Say Goodbye, soap namin, kapag may free days kami dun, nagwu-workshop kami.

“At happy ako na tinuturuan pa rin kami on the set ng acting coach namin.”

Vin is one to assess himself from time to time. He knows where he has to improve. The actor said that he has yet to “own his stage.”

He explained, “Kasi medyo pigil kaya dapat I have to completely express myself.

“Sensitive naman daw ako, which is positive. Pero in a way na parang… maging relaxed ka talaga na you own the place.”

He also added that he needs to be less conscious: “Parang… di ka mag-aaalala kung may matatamaan kang beteranong artista… I need to improve on that part.”

IDOL. Vin did not expect to be getting this much encouragement from his senior co-actors in Never Say Goodbye. If anything, he thought at the beginning that they would be his worst critics.

He described them as “kind” and “down to earth.” He added that they are always willing to extend their help while taping scenes with him.

“Sasabihin nila kung ano yung kailangan namin gawin, ganyan ka lang… inaalalayan nila kami.

“So, yun yung masaya dun. Ako dati, I go to work na medyo worried. Ngayon relaxed na relaxed na ako kasi I know na hindi sila nase-stress sa amin.

“Tinutulungan nila talaga kami,” Vin expressed gladly.

Among the seasoned actors he works with is Gardo Verzosa, who plays his father in the soap. Off cam, Vin calls the 43-year-old Machete star, “Abe,” meaning “friend” in Kapampangan.

The young actor raved, “Ang ganda nga nung sinasabi sa amin kasi may chemistry kami. So, happy ako na may chemistry kami [bilang] mag-ama!”

Their rapport on the set shows whenever they shoot their “father-and-son” repartees.

“Kasi naniniwala ako na... sabi niya sa akin, yung bonding namin is important.

“Ang galing niya kasi off the set… so, off cam, meron kaming connection na magkasama kami tapos na-a-apply namin siya sa screen na mag-ama talaga.

"So yun, happy ako dun.”

Vin looks up to Gardo Verzosa as his acting peg— “Ang galing, ang galing niya. Idol ko siya.”

While others are intimidated by their “heroes,” Vin said that he is lucky to get acting tips from him.

The most remarkable and helpful advice the elder actor offered, Vin shared: “Sabi niya pag rehearsals daw, kasi minsan pag rehearsals, binibigay ko na. So, tutulo na lahat [ng luha].

“Sabi niya sa akin, wag ganun kasi rehearsals lang yun. Dapat nagbi-build ka lang.

“Kapag nag-take na, saka mo ibuhos. Kasi pag lumabas na yun ng rehearsals, pa’no na pag-take mo?”
