Boy Abunda on handling controversies: "There is no absolute formula to defy them."

So I don’t pray for controversies. I don’t wish for controversies. But when they happen, we face them accordingly."

“Kris... I represent her. I do all the contracts for Kris sa endorsements.

“It’s a relationship na more than just being a manager.

Patuloy niya, “Kaya ito ang istorya—I’m still a co-manager but, technically, you know, I’m on a break.

NO FORMULA.

Mahirap.

"I dont wanna sound like blasé about it, pero sa tagal naman, nasanay na ako.

“It’s a question I think of managing problems, controversies...

"So I don’t pray for controversies. I don’t wish for controversies.

“But when they happen, we face them accordingly.

"Wala ring formula ‘yan, ha?

“Halimbawa yung nangyari fifteen years ago or ten years ago, you can...

“Of course, you learn a lesson along the way, but there is no absolute formula to defy them.

"The problems are unique, the controversies are unique, and they demand unique solutions.

Aniya, "That’s true. Hindi ako nahihiya to ask help from the experts.

"They can be lawyers or accountants sa ibang managers. To me, hingi ka ng tulong.

"Pero, nasanay na ako.

“I mean, all these years, hindi naman ako tinantanan ng mga controversies.

“Hindi tungkol sa akin pero tungkol sa mga taong malalapit sa akin—to Kris to Ai-Ai to Gretchen to Amy Perez in TV5.

"Yeah, ang ginagawa ko, hinaharap. Hinaharap. We do it.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE. Among the artists na hinawakan niya, sino ang pinakamahirap i-handle?

Natatawang sagot ni Boy, "Pare-pareho yun! It’s a very difficult question, you know.

“Each one has his own quirk… each one has its own good side and weaknesses.

"Kanya-kanya yun.

"Wala yung… actually, I am probably more difficult. I am difficult. I can’t be easy."

"Yes, only because Boy Abunda will talk to me—and that’s very important.

"Conversations are very important, dialogues are important, engagements are important.

"And Boy Abunda is the kind of talent who would let you know what he feels.

“And on top of this, yes, I would [manage Boy Abunda]."

"Iba-iba ’yan, ’no. And I’m not saying that Boy Abunda tells the truth all the time.

"It’s layered. May umpisa ’yan.

“Sasabihin ko sa ’yo na one-tenth muna... kapag artista ka... and then sasabihin ko sa ’yo na fifty percent until it becomes an eighty percent until it becomes a hundred percent.

"Oo, iba-iba yun. Kanya-kanya yun.

"The only reason I say na I don’t put my cards on the table immediately with regards to problems, kakayanin ko hangga’t kakayanin ko, e.

"Hangga’t kaya ko, ako muna.

“That’s why I am not probably effective on social networks because I’m a public, I’m on the television every day, and I’m a lurker.

"I know what happens in social media. I look up at blogs, I read blogs.

“I’m very aware what’s happening in social media but I haven’t reached that point na I let the people know where I am or what I’m eating or where I’m eating, what I’m thinking… Hindi pa."

FEARS.

Mabilis niyang sagot, "I have.

“My fear is katulad ng lahat—I fear that I have to contend with mortality.

“You know, I don’t know how I will behave if Nanay goes, di ba?

“Dati, hindi ko kayang sabihin ’yan, e.

"I have so many fears, but hindi ko fear ang malaos."

What keeps him going anyway?

Sagot ng award-winning TV host, "What keeps me going is the desire to optimize, to maximize whatever and whoever I am.

"What keeps me going is that hunger for… ayaw ko namang sabihing knowledge or the things that I dont know.

"Ngayon ngang October, I’m defending my... I’m finishing my doctoral degree on Social Development [sa Philippine Women’s University].

“After I graduated my masteral degree, tinuluy-tuloy ko yun.

“Ang tanong ko no’n, ’Bakit?’ ‘Hindi ko alam, e.’

"I wanted to broaden my perspective as an interviewer.

“Gutom lang siguro ako, gusto kong mas mahusay.

“I have so much respect with what I do.

"Ang sabi nila, ’Do you prepare your interviews at The Buzz?’

“’Yes, I do.’ I don’t condescend on my materials.

"I just did Frank Drilon, BB Gandanghari… pareho sa akin yun, interview yun.

“Pinaghahandaan ko yun, iginagalang ko yun."

TOUGH QUESTIONS.

"You dont... you never fear to ask certain questions but you are aware to be able to address sensibilities.

"May mga taong hindi handang itanong ang... like kay BB kanina, I was so careful not to ask about the HIV, pero nanggaling na rin kay BB, di ba?

"So, ang ibig sabihin nun ay bukas siyang pag-usapan. So, let’s go.

"Pero hindi ibig sabihin na when you are in front of a guest, you don’t do that para makabastos.

"You don’t sit in front of your guest trying to prove to your audience that you are brave and courageous. Hindi!

"You invite your guest, it’s a conversation, there’s a hard question and easy question, but you converse and you listen… you engage.

"You wouldn’t know that until it’s there.

“Each guest is unique, di ba? May iba, sensitibo about family matters.

"And sometimes, you wouldn’t know sensibilities until you’re there.

“And the tough thing is when you do a live interview."

Sino ba ang dream interview niya?

Sagot ni Boy, “Yet to come.

"Pero gusto n’yong malaman ang totoo? Now that she’s retiring… Barbara Walters.

"I mean, dream lang naman yun, pangarap. Ilusyon ko talaga yun.

“I’d love to do an interview with Barbara Walters.”
