Paul Soriano on producing and directing award-winning movies: “Every project for me is a dream, I’m living the dream.”

Paul Soriano on girlfriend Toni Gonzaga: “She’s a big inspiration and happy to be always by my side in every project that I do. Whether it’s a commercial or movies, she’s always there. She means a lot to me.”

Ginanap ang awards night sa Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theatre kagabi, August 4.

Nakangiting saad niya, “My next dream is to make another Best Picture...

"I don’t know, I just love to make films.

“Awards are already a victory that we can achieve and make a film, and I’m very excited to make more films.

“Philippine cinema seems to be praising whatever I do, but I have God with me, I have a great team. So, that’s it.”

AWARD-WINNING MOVIES.

“Hopefully next year," nakangiting sagot niya.

“I’m directing a film before the end of the year and we’re showing it early next year, so it’s very inspiring.

“When we started this movie [Transit], I have a great passion to do a movie abroad and I have a great team with me and a great film.”

Bilang isang direktor, ano ang unang kinukunsidera niya para tuluyan itong gawing isang pelikula?

Aniya, “It’s the story, it’s the heart of the film.

“When I fell in love with the story of Transit, sinabi ko kay Hannah na, ’Let me produce it.’

“And I think every director has a voice, every director has a treatment, has a style—and I have my own treatment and style."

Dagdag niya, “I love the freestyle of storytelling.

“When you go to a cinema, you want to watch a great story and a great movie also.

“So, that’s what I do every time I am involved in a project, as producer, director or whatever.”

FILM FESTIVALS.

“Ah, yeah, definitely,” sambit ng 31-year-old director.

“There are foundations supporting Filipino films… took a chance.

“Cinemalaya has grown in nine years and every year it gets bigger and bigger.

“Masaya ako na maraming Filipino artists din ang nade-develop dito, nadi-discover and, yeah, Philippine cinema is alive again.

“For me, as a director and producer, it is my vision to allow Filipino filmmakers who have an idea or story to tell it the way they want to.

“I understand sometimes budget gets in the way, but that’s my vision.

"Because when you put the trust sa isang Filipino filmmaker, films become really great.”

Ano naman ang kanyang dream project, if there’s any?

Sagot ni Paul, “Well, every project for me is a dream, I’m living the dream.

“I always wanted to be a filmmaker, whether as a director or producer.

“I’m happy that I would wake up every morning and live my dream, and I just wanna dream and don’t wake up.”

INSPIRATION.

Pagmamalaki niya, “Oh, she’s very inspiring, very supportive of me.

"And she’s also with the industry, so parang my success is hers as well.

“She’s a big inspiration and happy to be always by my side in every project that I do.

"Whether it’s a commercial or movies, she’s always there.

"She means a lot to me.”

If there’s a story, if she likes the story.

“I believe that we can be a pretty good team in cinema, so we have the whole future to do that.

“I’m very excited, there’s so much opportunity for both of us.”

“I always tell Toni na gusto ko, it’s something that is different from the usual na ginagawa niya.

“Toni is a very, very great actress and she needs the right material where her true acting capability will come out.

“And I hope it will come soon.”

Paano kung may mag-offer sa kanilang dalawa to be screen partners, tatanggapin ba niya?

Natawang sagot ni Paul, “I don’t know, pero definitely, one hundred percent, I’m behind the camera.

“To be honest, no. I would like to be behind the camera. I’m comfortable there.

"It seems she likes me behind the camera and let’s just keep it there.

“She takes the front camera and I take the back part.”

Kahit marami ang nagsasabing isa rin siyang leading-man material?

Muli siyang natawa at sinabing, “It’s very flattering, pero I’d just like to direct—it’s where I’m comfortable with.

“Let’s leave it na lang sa mga baguhang artists who have great potentials to become real actors.

“Spare me na lang!”

GOING STRONG.

Mabilis niyang tugon, “It’s very solid, happy, and it’s great. And, yeah, I love her very much.”

Si Toni na ba talaga ang "woman of his life"?

“That’s right!” bulalas ni Paul.

“We won’t spend much time together if we don’t see it forever.

"I want it forever and God is good.

“The foundation is solid, we put God in the center of our relationship.

“We fight, we argue, we have disagreements, but God always puts us together and we find solutions.

“It’s good that both parties are doing the best to really make it work.”

"That’s true,” pagsang-ayon niya.

“We all grow as individuals, we become mature in all the things that’s happening in a relationship, but we focus on what is more important.”

How about wedding plans?

“Wala pa, wala pa.

"But sometimes, of course, we talk mostly about things.

“Yeah, minsan napapag-usapan, but not seriously,” sabi ni Paul.
