Jasmine Curtis Smith on her Cinemalaya Best Supporting Actress award: “It’s really so overwhelming for me!”

Jasmine Curtis Smith on the rewards of being more discerning with roles: “I think, not choosy but I will break it down and see if it would fit me and what I want the public to see me at. And you know with a film like this, I won an award, it goes to show that it’s worthwhile to really take time in choosing your character. Otherwise, you’re just really playing the role for the sake of ha

Masaya niyang bulalas, “It’s really so overwhelming for me. I’m so thankful, I’m part of it.

“You know, firstly, for being chosen and being able to experience making a film. Even if I didn’t win an award, I’ll still be extremely happy to be part of such a wonderful movie.

“And for the movie to have won many awards, it goes to show that it’s worthwhile, a movie for everyone to see.

“We had a tutor, pero, noong nandoon na kami [Israel], so it was easier to give the accent and hear how people really spoke the language,” paliwanag ni Jasmine.

INSPIRED OR PRESSURED?

“Yeah, it’s kinda both but it’s also an inspiration. You know now, people are gonna start really looking at how I act.

“But at the same time, it’s an inspiration. I never really used to think na, you know, I act well. Okay lang, marunong akong umarte.

“I was shocked. Kasi at that time, we really had each other, we didn’t have an acting coach.

“We only had each other as acting coaches. We listened to what the director and writer wanted and then, we’d talk to each other as actors and rely on each other,” patuloy niya.

Dugtong pa niya, “It makes me happy that I wasn’t depending on an acting coach and I was able to deliver and be recognized by such a prestigious body as Cinemalaya.

“We know for a fact that they really know what they’re talking about.

“And to see what they did with the other categories, like how they decided not to give out the Best Actor award, di ba?

“It just shows that they don’t just give awards. They give it to someone who’s worthy and really deserving. Otherwise, they don’t give it at all.”

“Of course,” nakangiti niyang sagot.

“I would love to audition again.”

Sabi naman ni Jasmine, “I think, it also helps that she’s been in the industry longer than I have. Kasi siyempre, nakakuha ako agad ng tips on how to act a certain role and how to deliver lines.

“Although, she’s done more of mainstream movies and it’s a whole different industry but it helps, all the acting techniques that she gave me.

“Naa-apply ko pa rin siya. Advantage para sa akin, so, I think, that’s also contributed a lot to how I gave life to Yael [her character].”

CHOOSY WITH ROLES NOW?

Paglinaw niya, “I think, not choosy but I will break it down and see if it would fit me and what I want the public to see me at.

“And you know with a film like this, I won an award, it goes to show that it’s worthwhile to really take time in choosing your character.

Otherwise, you’re just really playing the role for the sake of having a project and where’s the passion in that?

“Where’s the heart in your career? You’re just gonna choose a character kasi may project, di ba?”

Maipapayo niya ba sa mga baguhan to “take time” sa pagpili ng proyekto?

“I think so,” saad niya.

“I didn’t expect to be chosen just from the open audition. Siyempre, ako, oh my gosh, I came from mainstream, so feeling ko baka hindi ako piliin.

“Baka they want someone who’s a bit more experienced and everything.

“But you know, to have the trust given to you, it shows na you don’t have to have lots of experience beforehand or a whole record for this movie.

“Obviously, it’s just having enough trust in yourself and feeling that from the people also na maganda ang kalalabasan ng ginagawa mo.”

WELL-DESERVED REWARD.

“Actually, I haven’t been able to like celebrate. Kumain ako after ng awards night. Nagpunta ’ko ng Shakey’s.

“Tapos, kumain lang ako ng pizza. Naghanap pa talaga kami! Kasi yung sa Makati Ave., it was closed na. So, naghanap kami ng 24 hours. Nag-order kami ng mga packages.

“Wala lang, yun lang, happy na ’ko. Then, the next day, pumasok ako. It was good,” masaya niyang pagbabalik-tanaw.

FAMILY EVENT.

“So, it was a family event. I was so happy, everyone was there,” sabi pa niya.

“Yeah, I think, because we all didn’t expect to have won so many awards to begin with.

“May kaba pa rin, kasi siyempre, you’re opening it to the entire Philippines now, so, you know, you have many eyes that will judge the film and how much they’ll enjoy it.

“Siyempre, kahit sabihin namin na ayaw naming pansinin ang mga taong hindi nag-enjoy, it still bothers us, but why?

“We did our best. We like it. The people like it, but kayo, hindi. But you know, at the same time, we’re a bit okay na.

“We’re happy. We’re so happy where we are with the awards that we were given.
