Joel Torre on winning Best Actor in Puchon Filmfest: “Parang Team Gilas... sa sobrang tuwa, e, mangiyak-ngiyak ka.”

Joel Torre considers his role in OTJ as "a role of a lifetime." He says, “At my age, akala ko relegated na lang ako sa tatay roles, na you get to shoot in five days and that’s it. But OTJ made me a significant part of the story."

Tugon niya, “It’s very, very special kasi I’ve been to Puchon eight years ago and I’ve seen how the festival go.

Very special because it’s been a long time since a Filipino actor won an international award.

“I mean, there is Bwakaw, sina Eddie Garcia and si Eugene Domingo sa [Ang Babae Sa] Septic Tank. And to be among them, I’m very, very proud and humbled.

“Tatang is a role of a lifetime for an actor.

“At my age, akala ko relegated na lang ako sa tatay roles, na you get to shoot in five days and that’s it.

“But OTJ made me a significant part of the story.

MENTOR TO THE STARS.

Ano ang pakiramdam ng pagiging “mentor to the stars”?

Sabi ng award-winning actor, “I feel very, very honored kasi may kanya-kanyang school of acting naman iyan.

Sa On The Job, ako ang mentor.

"You know, it’s really nice that the young actors are very willing to learn.

“Given the chance, I would like to do workshops for aspiring actors.”

“Gerald is very, very aggressive and he wants to learn. He wants to absorb a lot of things right away.

“You should watch him in the film, maganda yung ipinakita ni Gerald,” sabi ni Joel.

What’s best naman about Piolo?

“Well, Piolo understands totally the filmmaking because he’s a producer-actor and he has a very strong presence on screen.

“I’ve seen him grow as an actor. Yung first TV show niya, yung Esperanza, nandoon ako.”

BOX-OFFICE RESULTS.

“Oh, yes, of course, definitely, absolutely,” sagot niya.

“Kasi ang bottom line doon is yung box-office success naman e para, you know, to encourage more filmmakers and especially the producers.

“Katulad ng sinabi ko, it’s good to show your film in festivals but the bottom line for a festival is you get to sell your movie in an international film market, which I think On The Job is very successful to date.”

Ayon kay Joel, “Binili ng North America, sa US territory, France, Australia, and recently Japan bought the film for festivals.

“Aside from the prestige and the awards, it also serves the film market.

“Like Toronto is the biggest film market in North America that’s why a lot of people want to show their films in Toronto.”

SECRET OF LONGEVITY.

Aniya, “You have to love your work and, of course, you have to invest in your craft.

You have to learn, learn and keep on learning.

“If you can go to workshops, well and good.

“At saka try to be the best in your field. You know, sa dami ng kumpitensiya, galingan mo na.

“And of course, be happy, be thankful, and be humble.”
