Heavy rains did not prevent Candy girls from trooping to SM North EDSA’s Skydome, lining up, and screaming, “We love you, Daniel Padilla!”
Undoubtedly, he is today’s embodiment of a male teen idol.
The son of Rommel Padilla and Karla Estrada, however, seems to be taking his popularity in stride.
In an interview held yesterday, August 18, Daniel told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other reporters that he has not really gotten used to overwhelming public attention.
“Never akong nasanay.
“At iba-iba kasi e, hindi pare-pareho talaga— minsan okay, minsan hindi…”
He doesn’t want to feel complacent either.
“… hindi ka dapat nasasanay!
“Lahat ng shows ko, dapat first time din, lahat ang feeling ko, first time.”
During the autograph-signing and picture-taking with fans, a few girls aggressively hugged him even if the organizers repeatedly announced, “Bawal lumapit.”
PEP asked: Do you feel violated whenever girls do that?
“No! No, no, actually, okay lang sa akin, bawal sa ABS,” he laughed, adding, “kaya nakita niyo naman, okay lang naman siyempre, wala naman tayong magagawa.”
The 18-year-old actor said he would do the same if he saw the former lead guitarist of American hardcore rock band Guns N’ Roses.
Even his screen partner Kathryn Bernardo, he said, understands that kissing or hugging is part of their job.
So, she doesn’t get jealous?
What if it’s the other way around— a male fan becomes too straightforward with Kathryn?
He replied with a smile, “Depende naman e, iba naman sa babae sa lalaki.”
Meanwhile, it was hard to miss the not-so-young ladies among the audience— two of them had their Candy fan mag signed by the Star Magic talent onstage, and one was even lucky to meet Daniel backstage.
Yahoo’s Karen Valeza asked: What else does he want to achieve?
“Yun uli,” referring to his albums, concerts, television projects, and movies.
“Lahat yun uli, paulit-ulit, di ba, ‘tsaka, wala pa nga akong [napapatunayan]… Kumbaga oo meron, pero kulang pa.”
That’s why, his mom’s perennial advice to him is, “Basta kung ano daw ginagawa ko ngayon, tuluy-tuloy lang.”
So even if he’d sing the whole afternoon or sign a hundred autographs or smile for a thousand cameras, Daniel said he will always have the energy for fans.
It’s a small thing to do for people who bought his now-quadruple platinum album, went to his sold-out concerts, and watched his TV and movie projects.
