Tom Rodriguez was still “under strict supervision” of his doctor when PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with him at the Fall/ Winter 2013 fashion show of Pedro, on September 12.
He related, “Nakiusap kami din sa doktor kung puwede… puwede nila kaming i-release na.
“And, sa awa ng Diyos, pumayag din naman siya as long as I report back for a CBC.”
(According to thefreedictionary.com, CBC—which stands for Complete Blood Count is “a routine analysis performed on a sample of blood taken from the patient’s vein with a needle and vacuum tube.”)
In the case of Tom, who was diagnosed with dengue fever and upper respiratory tract infection, his “white blood cell levels” have to be monitored.
Him confinement in a hospital last September 6 had him worrying about two things: health and commitments.
Of the latter, Tom said, “I’m a workaholic kaya nanghinayang ako sobra!”
Hence, during this interview with YES! magazine, he admitted to feeling “a bit nauseous once in a while.”
And before coming to Pedro’s event, he did some dubbing, had his CBC done, then headed straight to a pictorial.
THE ENDING FOR VINCENT. The topic shifted to his soap My Husband’s Lover, which also stars Dennis Trillo and Carla Abellana.
“Shot in the head!” he said, referring to this week’s highlight episode, where his character Vincent attempted suicide.
“What happens next?” we asked.
Tom‘s anti-spoiler reply, “I will just have to wait and see. I’ll have to wait and see pa if he will survive after.”
In October, the soap will reach its finale. What kind of ending would he want for Vincent?
"Ako, I’m still an optimist. I would still… still be holding up.”
And if he were to give his character a choice, it would be “peaceful resolution.”
Tom rationalized, “Hindi man perpekto katulad ng totoong buhay, at least, it shows na people make do with what they have.
“Which is the Filipino spirit, it’s the Filipino way—we make do with what we have, we make the best out of the possible situations or make the best out of the resources that we’re given.
“It’s very Pilipino so sana ganun din ang ending: that they make the best out of everything that happened.”
PARTING WITH VINCENT. On October 12, the whole cast will have a concert in Araneta Coliseum titled One More Try: My Husband’s Lover The Concert.
With less than a month to rehearse, he’s “nervous and excited at the same time.”
He assured the TomDen fans, “…kami ni Dennis, we’ll be singing…”
What’s next after the soap?
“So far sa TV, wala pa akong ano, e. I mean, wala pa akong alam. Pero sa movies, meron kaming ginagawa ni Carla ngayon, actually for Regal films, it’s called Let’s Take A Chance.
Tom described, “It’s a nice, feel-good romantic comedy film. Parang medyo Korean movie yung pagkagawa sa kanya.”
He’s also joining Joey Paras in VIVA’s Bekikang, which is under the direction of Wenn Deramas.
The actor/ singer/ illustrator resumed,“And of course there’s the Cosmo Bachelor Bash. They were so nice enough to put me on the cover.
“It’s such an honor. I don’t even know how it happened or what their criteria was na ako yung naisipan nilang ilagay dun.
"But nonetheless, I’m flattered. Honestly, it’s an honor.”
AFTER TOMDEN. Back to Dennis, his character’s lover in the Kapuso top-rating primetime series, we mentioned that their days are numbered.
Sounding grateful to the fans, he remarked, “We’re happy about it… we feel we’ve given what they want.”
Tom added, “At the same time, I still would want to establish my own identity first.”
That, he underlined, will be his goal after the soap.
In short: versatility.
Moving on, “If you rely on loveteam, especially with a guy [chuckles], your room for growth will be limited.
In other words: He wants “to be paired with anyone,” and “get to work with other actors and actresses in the Kapuso network.”
