From being a movie actor to showing his comic side in sitcoms to sharing his travel tales in Pinoy Explorer, Aga Muhlach now has a new mission.
In jest, he added, “maging dancer, maging singer…”
Chuckles filled the function room, where TV5 held the press conference for his shows earlier, September 30.
Kidding aside, he is set to wear the game master’s hat in his upcoming game show—Let’s Ask Pilipinas—which will start airing on October 14, from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Asked about his preparations, he said there’s none, “I’m just taping.”
He doesn’t have a peg, but there’s a way for him to gauge whether he’s succeeding or not.
“I just have to be,” he began.
“Ang feeling ko lang ano, ang game show kasi is not about me. Ang game show is about the contestants. That’s very important.
“So yun ang talagang dapat kong pag-aralan dito, papa’no ko ibibigay sa kanila yung attention, papa’no ko pasasayahin ang contestants because when the contestants are having fun, then viewers are gonna have fun.
“If I’m successful doing that, then, magwo-work yung game show.”
NEW SHOW. Wilma Galvante, the network’s chief for entertainment content, revealed why she thinks the Pinoy Explorer host is the right fit for the show.
“Masayang katrabaho si Aga dahil hindi nawawala yung pagiging curious nung tao.”
Galvante also mentioned GMA-7’s failed attempt to pirate the then-Kapamilya actor before, and was happy that finally, in TV5, she’ll be working with him.
Back to Let’s Ask Pilipinas, an American quiz show that debuted in September 2012, the show requires four contestants who will compete with each other while at their respective locations.
There will be auditions and they will be screened.
With much excitement, Aga threw in, “Sa final question, tatanungin ko pa siya kung itataya mo ba yung 200,000 or 100,000 mong natitira.
“Kasi pag nanalo ka nito, pag nasagot mo yung tanong, yung 100,000 mo, magiging times five, so that’s 500,000.
“Or, puwede kang manghingi lang ng amount.
“Sa 100,000, gusto mong itaya lang sa question is 30,000 pesos, so pag natalo ka, 30,000 lang ang nawala sa ‘yo, yung 70,000 mauuwi mo pa rin.
“If you win the 30,000, you come home with 130,000 pesos.”
It works like Family Feud, where questions about “social issues” and “everyday life” will be asked.
NEXT MOVIE. Another topic discussed during the press conference was his next film project.
But first, he said, “Kailangan muna pumayat.”
So he’s been working out, and the present status is, “20 lbs. to go.”
Aga is taking his time, carefully studying the proposed scripts.
The 44-year-old actor related, “Hindi ko pa alam kung ano ang gagawin kong pelikula. Unang-una, nanghihingi pa ako ng istorya.
“Parang feeling ko, in terms of romance, in terms of mga love story, parang ang dami ko nang nagawa talaga.
“Parang I cannot shortchange my fans or my followers or my viewers.”
Does he have a role in mind?
This explained why Aga has high regard for indie films.
“Ang sarap kasi may freedom silang maggawa ng sarili nilang gawa.”
But, of course, he wasn’t discounting the importance of the film’s commercial value.
“It’s not all about the money. It’s important also na kapag gumawa ka ng pelikula, yung pagod mo, sana naman panoorin.
“I think of my viewers all the time…
“Gusto kong magka-pelikulang may kabuluhan at panonoorin din ng tao…
“Something that’s fun to watch also.”
Entertainment writer Edwin Sallan cut in: How about doing father roles?
A pause before Aga said, “I don’t find anything wrong with that. It’s just that it’s not in my…
“Parang I never imagined na umabot sa point…
“It depends ano, for movies? It depends kung anong istorya.
“But if I’m just gonna be the father in that movie… But if it’s a story on a father and the son, then I don’t mind doing it.”
NEXT LEADING LADY? One thing Aga was certain about: he wants to work again with Lea Salonga, and wants to be paired with Marian Rivera.
Of Lea, he recounted that their tandem in Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal (1992) paved the way for more romantic-themed movies such as May Minamahal (1993) with Aiko Melendez, Forever (1994) with Mikee Cojuangco, Basta’t Kasama Kita (1995), to name a few.
Of Marian, “May nakikita ako, e.”
As early as 2008, there’s been a clamor for their team-up.
Aga added, “Parang, puwede kayong mag-romance pero puwede mong baliin.
“Yung mukha niya, di ba, ang gandang kuha’n na pareho kayong maayos… parehong birthday pa kami.”
CLAUDINE BARRETTO. Lastly, entertainment editor Janice Navida solicited his opinion regarding the legal battle of Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago.
With caution, he chose his words, “What’s happening now is beyond their control…”
He admitted to being in touch with them, “Marami na kaming pinag-usapan. Kilalang-kilala ko sila…
“The Santiagos are like brothers to me… we grew up together.”
Aga continued, “I feel bad, because I was doing Kailangan Kita with Claudine when Raymart was courting her.
“And as a matter of fact, sinagot ni Claudine si Raymart nung birthday ng mga anak ko, sa party ng mga anak ko.”
About three times, he repeatedly said, “I feel bad… and I just pray.”
Lastly, his two cents worth on the issue: “If they’re better off not to be together, then so be it.”
