A week before the end of My Husband’s Lover, GMA Network’s phenomenal gay-themed primetime series, its cast members mounted a concert dubbed One More Try at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Dennis Trillo, Tom Rodriguez, and Carla Abellana led the cast members who took part in the two-hour show held last Saturday, October 12.
Before the show started, a humorous warning was flashed on the big screen: "Ang programang ito ay SPG: super pasasalamat ng mga girlash."
To set the mood of the concert, a topless guy came out onstage playing a violin.
Kuh Ledesma, who plays Elaine Soriano in the series, kicked off the show by singing the theme song of MHL, "One More Try," as clips from the series were shown in the big screens.
The three lead stars—Dennis, Tom, and Carla—then addressed the crowd gathered at the Big Dome.
"Ngayong gabi, ipaparamdam ni Lally ang pagmamahal niya para kay Vincent," said Carla, referring to Tom’s character who is torn between his wife (played by Carla) and his gay lover, Eric (played by Dennis).
"Beh" is the now-famous term of endearment of Vincent and Eric.
Carla then told the audience, "This is our way of saying thank you para sa lahat na nagbuhos ng suporta para sa amin."
After singing an upbeat song, Carla again addressed the audience, "Siguro alam n’yo kung bakit ako na-in love kay Vincent. He’s a gentleman, may pinag-aralan, mabait, and most of all, he makes me laugh."
Next, Tom gave his rendition of Bruno Mars’s "Just the Way You Are."
After his song, Tom also shared his thoughts about the woman who plays his wife in the series:
"Alam n’yo, hindi naman mahirap mahalin si Lally. Ideal wife siya, pero kahit anong gawin ko, may ibang itinitibok ang puso ko."
An intense scene was then shown on the LED screen, featuring Eric as he confronted Vincent with: "Paano ako? Kaya mo bang isauli? Kaya mo ba isauli ang puso ko? Sorry lang ang sasabihin mo sa ’kin? Damn you!"
There was actually a rotating door onstage to simulate the scene shot for the show.
For his solo spot number, Dennis performed "The Man Who Can’t Be Moved" by The Script.
Carla (as Lally) introduced the next number with her spiel: "Ang sakit na ang taong minahal mo nang lubusan ay ang dami palang itinatago sa ’yo at kailanman ay hindi naging totoo."
Dennis and Tom thrilled the audience with their rendition of "I Need You Now."
Tom (as Vincent) told Dennis (as Eric): "Feel na feel mo yung kanta, Beh."
To this, Dennis quipped: "Siyempre, kasi ikaw ang ka-duet ko."
Another segment of the show featured Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos, Maricris Garcia, and Kyla singing a medley of Barbra Streisand songs for the crowd.
Kuh Ledesma and Roi Vinzon also had their moment. They sang together.
Kuh and Roi play Vincent’s parents, Elaine and Armando Soriano.
Kuh then addressed the crowd to reveal the impact of the show on women.
"Ang dami pong kababaihan na lumalapit sa akin at sinasabi na dahil sa MHL, ’Parang nagdududa ako sa boyfriend ko kaya ipinagpaliban ko muna, kikilatisin ko nang mabuti ang boyfriend ko.
"Dapat nga ipinagdadasal ang lifetime partner at naghihintay ng tamang oras para mag-settle."
JOEY DE LEON. One of the highlights of the show featured a pre-recorded video of Joey de Leon talking about the popularity of the show.
He also shared trivia by revealing that Anton Alanganin was the name of the first gay character for Pepe Pimentel’s show, titled Kwentong Kutsero.
According to Joey, the word bakla is an acronym for "babae katawan lalake."
He said the gay theme has become so popular that some show titles could be changed to cater to the pink market.
In his video, Joey said this about GMA’s noontime show, of which he is one of the co-hosts: "Maraming palabas sa telebisyon na nagbalak na maki-beki talaga. Naisip ko na i-suggest na palitan ang Eat Bulaga! to ’Eat Bulagay!’ o ’Eat Behlaga!’"
As for ABS-CBN’s noontime show, he said: "Hindi lang kami, pati ang kalaban namin, yung katapat namin, yung kapitbahay namin, It’s Showtime, ang balak yata nilang gawin, ’It’s Shokietime.’"
Meantime, Joey was asked about Willie Revillame’s Wowowillie, which aired its final episode last Saturday, October 12.
Joey said in his video, shown to the public that Saturday night: "Si Willie rin nagbalak, pinaka-madamdamin pa nga yung kay Willie. Ang balak na ipalit na title ay ’Wawa Wally.’"
As for German Moreno’s show, the witty comedian made this suggestion: "Waley Tulugay."
Joey continued, "Pati news [programs], yung 24 Oras, gagawing ’Beh-nte Kwatro Oras.’
"Natatandaan n’yo yung partner ko na si Mel [Tiangco], binabalak ring maki-beki, sapagkat yung Magpakailanman ay gagawing ’Magpakailanman-to-man.’"
The video also featured testimonials from Joyce Bernal, Lorna Tolentino, Regine Velasquez, and Erik Santos who said about MHL, "maraming nakaka-relate."
Radio personality Mike Enriquez was also shown giving his opinion about the show on his radio program.
To end his video presentation, Joey said, "Phenomenal talaga, at para sa akin, puwede nang gawan ng movie."
OTHER CAST MEMBERS. During the concert, other female cast members of MHL had the chance to showcase their talents for a flamenco dance number.
These included Bettina Carlos, who plays Vicky, the "bessie" or best friend of Lally; Karel Marquez, who plays Evelyn, the sister of Lally; and Glydel Mercado, who plays Sandra, the mother of Lally and Evelyn.
As soon as she said this, the audience at the Big Dome erupted into cheers!
For the final segment of the concert, clips of Vincent in a military camp were shown on the big screen.
Lady Gaga’s "Born This Way" was played, and audiences were surprised to see Kevin Santos, who plays Danny (Eric’s best friend), being carried by a platoon of soldiers, eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Victor Basa (David), Pancho Magno (Paul), and Rodjun Cruz (Martin) also wore fatigue uniforms that they promptly discarded, marking their moment of baring their muscular torsos onstage.
Topless guys with feather boas and skimpy underwear also paraded onstage.
The fun vibe continued when Gloc 9 appeared to rap the song "Sirena."
Keempee de Leon, who plays Zandro, came out wearing a red gown. And as the song ended, Keempee sat down on a red flower-shaped seat that was then lifted high up in the air.
Before saying goodbye to the crowd, Dennis said, "If you want to see more scenes, you can get the DVD of My Husband’s Lover."
Carla cried as she called Suzette Doctolero (the show’s creator/writer) and director Dominic Zapata to join them onstage.
Tom and Dennis also did their signature fist bump, the move that was their characters’ way of showing affection for each other.
Fireworks were suddenly ignited onstage, as if to signal the end of the show.
However, Dennis and Tom didn’t leave immediately. They rendered the MHL theme song, "One More Try," for an encore.
Long-haired Geoff Eigenmann was spotted at the Big Dome to show his support for his girlfriend, Carla Abellana.
Janice de Belen, Barbie Forteza, Aiza Seguerra, German Moreno, MTRCB Chairman Atty. Toto Villareal, and Mike Enriquez were among the celebrities present that night.
