Tom Rodriguez gushes about Judy Ann Santos’s acting: “So effortless... ’Andun na, parang everything just happens like magic!”

"It’s like she owns that space! Parang at that moment, she’s Julie [Judy Ann’s character in T’yanak]. And she can make it happen every time like magic. I’m really in awe. I’m so impressed and hopefully, sana I took something away from it that I could use in my future work," Tom Rodriguez says about his T’yanak co-star Judy Ann Santos.

“Ayoko talagang tinitingnan.

“I’ll take a quick glance pero I’d rather, kasi usually I read the whole script na naman, e. Parang paulit-ulit, so at least alam ko na, more or less, what will happen. So when they tell me what scene it is, I can, parang, alam ko na.

“Pero ‘pag tinitingnan ko kasi yung breakdown minsan, na-o-overwhelm ako. Kasi siguro it’s a little trick na I picked up kahit before pa, e.

“Kahit kunwari you do something simple na if you set small goals for yourself, leading up to the bigger goals, mas madali.

“Kunwari simple lang, push-up mo. ‘Pag nagpu-push-up ako, hanggang ten kunwari. Then, ‘pag maririnig ko na yung six, seven, eight nine, ten, napapagod na yung katawan mo.

“Pero kung pina-five ko, kunwari one, two, three, four, five, sige five pa!

“Minsan hindi mo namamalayan lumalampas ka na ng 100, lumalampas ka ng ano. It’s a mental trick na ginagawa ko. I don’t like to look at the [sequence] breakdown para I don’t expect na, ‘Ay, ganito karami!’

“Na parang all day dine–dread mo, ‘Forty sequences tayo ngayon.’ Na nagiging mabigat na yung balikat mo umpisa pa lang ng araw.

“I like keeping myself surprised, para at least yung energy mo hanggang alas tres ng umaga, hanggang kinabukasan, hanggang alas-siyete ng umaga. At least nandun pa rin, hindi nawawala... to yourself you can keep saying, ‘Ito one more sequence, ito isa pang sequence.’

“So yung mga ganun,” pahayag ng My Destiny male lead.

COPING WITH A HABIT. Nakausap ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Tom sa last shooting day ng indie horror movie na T’yanak sa UP Diliman campus sa Quezon City noong Sabado, October 4, kaya tinanong namin si Tom kung ano ang natutunan niya sa paggawa ng naturang pelikula.

“I’ve learned so much, actually. Si Direk Peque [Gallaga], naano nila a problem I’ve been struggling with, yung noo ko na kumukunot.

“Na it’s such ano, I have no idea what I was gonna do with it na with one simple remedy, and it seems to be working so far.

“Not perfectly, I mean, nagagawa ko pa rin. It’s been a habit since I was in high school kasi. Pero at least, kahit papaano, I mean although I’ve been conscious of it for a while now since napagsabihan ako.

“Na usually kasi when people tell you na, ‘O, huwag mong ikukunot ang noo, huwag mong ikunot.’

“Ang nangyayari tuloy, lalong kumukunot! Na sinabi niya na ‘You just can’t take something away and not put something else in its place.’

“So ‘ayun, parang simple substitution lang. You simply transfer that wasted energy somewhere else and ‘ayun, nawawala,” at natawa si Tom.

“And other things din, like how they work here [T’yanak set], it’s so intoxicating kasi.

“Na kahit kunyari you come from another work, na you have no sleep, you have no ano, somehow, ‘pag ‘andito ka hindi mo nararamdaman kasi everyone is so jovial, everyone is so pleasant, everyone’s so welcoming, and everyone’s so collaborative.

"Siguro iyon, that’s the biggest thing I learned, na it’s possible pala na when you do a project, na you yourself can be involved, na you yourself can have a voice and [contribute] some inputs.

“Kasi ako usually I’m shy and I’m scared to speak out or say something. Here they make it very welcome and they turn it into a dialogue, na tuloy parang mas na-e-excite ka, you feel like instead of just being an actor, you own a little bit of the movie.

“Na parang, ‘Ah, ito na-suggest ko ito.’

“It’s a nice feeling pala, it’s very new to me since bago lang ako sa industry.

“So it’s nice, experiencing these things. Sana I would get the chance to work with this team again.

“I really had the greatest time.”

JUDAY’S ACTING IS “LIKE MAGIC.”

Even just watching her. Kaya nga minsan while she’s doing her scenes, I don’t wanna go back up sa standby area, kasi I wanna watch and I wanna really learn as much as I can.

“And you know we have a great cast.”

“So effortless,” bulalas ni Tom.

“Going through different emotions and even going into character. Lalo na paulit-ulit [ang eksena] kasi it’s one camera, pero consistently, she does it like clockwork, it’s like a button you press.

“Andun na, parang everything just happens like magic!

“Na parang she can be at the same moment every time and it feels new and fresh every time.

“Several scenes I’ve seen it, pero one scene na talagang blew me away, not just for Ms. Judy Ann but sila Direk Peque at Direk Lore [Reyes] din, their directorial work in that scene na isang camera yung ginamit and it was yung death scene ni Lola Kale [Liza Lorena] na isang camera lang and isang tuhog yung scene and it felt very, very theatrical.

“Parang musical theater yung dating ng isang sequence, no cut. Pero Ms. Judy Ann did the exact same thing perfectly. On cue every time, phone call, frantic, iyak, pagpunta dito, kailangan ganito.

“Parang, sabi ko, ‘Wow how can she do that? How can she just jump into it?’

“Na ako as a newcomer nag-i-struggle ako even just to maintain my emotion, even just to stay in character. Minsan, not to get distracted by the blocking, by the lights, kung nasa-shadow-an mo yung mukha nung kasama mo. Kung natatakpan mo sila sa kamera, kung nasaan yung kamera mo.

“All these things, sometimes are so prevalent, parang nandun sa ulo ko, dahil parang masyado akong conscious sa ganun since I’m relatively new to it.

“Pero for them, lalo na si Ms. Judy Ann, wala, it’s like she owns that space!

“Parang at that moment, she’s Julie [Judy Ann’s character in T’yanak].

“And she can make it happen every time like magic.

“I’m really in awe. I’m so impressed and hopefully, sana I took something away from it that I could use in my future work.

“It’s unbelievable!”
