Edward Norton’s Birdman leads the Golden Globe nominations with seven nods, just ahead of Boyhood and The Imitation Game, which both received five.

Birdman leads the Golden Globe nominations with seven nods.

The black comedy movie—which stars Emma Stone, Edward Norton and Michael Keaton—is up for Best Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Comedy or Musical as well as several individual awards for its cast and director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The Best Film category will be hotly contested with nods for Boyhood and The Imitation Game, which both received five nominations apiece, as well as The Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher, and Selma.

The Imitation Game’s Benedict Cumberbatch will do battle with fellow Brits Eddie Redmayne and David Oyelowo in the Best Actor in a Drama category, while Jake Gyllenhaal and Steve Carell are also up for the prestigious accolade.

Redmayne’s movie The Theory of Everything—in which he plays physicist Stephen Hawking—is up for four awards, including Felicity Jones’ Best Actress in a Drama nod, which will see her go up against Jennifer Aniston, Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike, and Reese Witherspoon.

Birdman’s Norton has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, but will face competition from Robert Duvall, Mark Ruffalo, JK Simmons, and Ethan Hawke.

Norton’s Birdman co-star Stone will go up against Patricia Arquette, Jessica Chastain, Keira Knightley, and Meryl Streep for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

The Grand Budapest Hotel helmer Wes Anderson will do battle with Ava Duvernay (Selma), David Fincher (Gone Girl), Iñárritu (Birdman), and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) in the Best Director category.

Anderson will also take on Iñárritu, Linklater, Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) and Graham Moore (The Imitation Game) for the Best Screenplay prize.

Emily Blunt earned a nod for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Into the Woods, but will go up against fellow Brit Dame Helen Mirren as well as Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and Quvenzhané Wallis in the category.

There was also plenty of joy for Brits in the TV categories as Downton Abbey picked up two nominations, for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress for Joanne Froggatt.

The ITV period drama will take on The Affair, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, and House of Cards in the main category, but the show missed out on a Best Actor or Best Actress nod.

The Affair had nods for both thanks to Dominic West and Ruth Wilson, while House of Cards also earned a hat-trick of nods as its leading stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright were put up for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.

The Golden Globe nominations were announced by Kate Beckinsale, Peter Krause, Paula Patton, and Jeremy Piven, who all took turns reading out the names of the fortunate stars.

The 72nd Annual Golden Globes will take place on January 11, 2015, and the ceremony will welcome back hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who are set to present the show together for a third year running.
