“After a few years after I was launched as one of the members of Star Circle Batch 5 in 1997, I left for the States to finish my studies.
“I also helped out in our family business here. Kaya pabalik-balik din ako dito sa Pilipinas while I was studying pa,” kuwento pa ni William nang makapanayam ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa Cafe Romulo along Sct. Lazcano Street in Quezon City last June 10.
Ayon pa kay William, “After that, I left again and I came back na in 2006, and that’s when I decided to have a career in broadcasting.
“I first hosted One Morning at RPN-9. I also co-hosted the public service program Damayan with my lola, Ms. Rosa Rosal.
“I was also given my own public service show by NBN 4 titled @ Ur Serbis.
“In 2008, I was offered to anchor the news program Newsforce at Global News Network (GNN) and they made me host of the public affairs talk show, Opinion Leaders with William Thio.”
HAPPY WITH NEW CALLING. Bukod sa Why News ay kasama rin si William sa morning show ng UNTV na Good Morning Kuya at meron din siyang 30-minute feature show titled Spotlight.
“I can now say that I have found my place in this business.
“I did not succeed as an actor. Aaminin ko ‘yan. Hindi talaga ako para sa showbiz.
"Though I had my share of good times in showbiz because I experienced doing TV shows and movies. And I was able to work with different stars during that time.
“I was happy doing commercials noon, and I am lucky to be still doing that hanggang ngayon,” ngiti pa niya.
BETTER AT TAGALOG NOW. Nakilala si William bilang Close-Up Boy noong 1996.
Natatawa niyang kuwento, “I couldn’t speak Tagalog fluently noon. In short, bulol ako!
“It’s because I lived in different countries and my primary language was Bahasa because I was born and raised in Indonesia.
“Second language ko yung English. I learned to speak English noong tumira kami sa U.S.
“Yung Tagalog, nahirapan talaga ako noon. Kaya sa mga nagawa ko noong movies, I was always dubbed by somebody else.
“My Tagalog is much better now than before. Unlike noon, nahihirapan ako.”
Ang mga nagawang movies noon ni William ay Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot with Donna Cruz ; Ikaw Pala Ang Mahal Ko with Gelli de Belen and Ariel Rivera; Halik with Ruffa Gutierrez and Matrikula with Jao Mapa and Rosanna Roces.
“I also did one of the earliest indie film titled Inter.m@tes with Raymond Bagatsing and Ian Veneracion.
“Siguro hindi lang talaga ako cut-out to be an actor.
“I was destined for other things and wala namang akong regrets na hindi naging successful ang showbiz career ko,” diin pa niya.
STILL SINGLE.
Pag-amin niya, “Siguro mas nabigyan ko ng maraming panahon ang trabaho ko and, on top of that, I’m also in charge of our family business.
“I guess they just couldn’t understand my situation when it comes to my job.
“But I am praying that one day, Miss Right will come along and she will be the one who will understand the things that are happening in my life.
“I like to share this life with somebody who will love and appreciate it as much as I do.”
