CEBU—As he graduates with honors, cum laude, today, March 25, Erwin Valmoria Macua proves that sheer hard work and determination pay off.
The 38-year-old family man is a security guard by night and a full-time student by day.
At St. Theresa’s College (STC) in Cebu, he works on a 12-hour night shift, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and attends classes from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to the article published by Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Cebu Daily News, Macua finished a degree in Elementary Education (BeED), and had been a “consistent Dean’s Lister” since 2013.
Talking about his accomplishment, Macua said, “Dili ko katuo nga makaabot ko ani nga point. Nag lutaw pako karon”
(I could not believe that I would reach this point. I am still on cloud nine.)
Back in 1997, Macua dropped out of college after only one semester of studying civil engineering at the Divine Word College in Tagbilaran, Bohol.
His parents, whose means of livelihood was farming, could not afford to pay for his tuition.
Presently, Macua is married with three kids. This means juggling work and school at the same time come with a lot of sacrifices.
He thanked his wife Irenea and his family for their support and understanding.
Macua said nothing beats the feeling of making his family proud by finishing his education.
He also gave credit to his classmates for making his school life and situation more endurable.
Did you know he never took a leave of absence from work no matter how tough the demands of his school life were?
And his graduation day was no exception.
A security guard at STC for 17 years now, he still went on duty yesterday and finished his shift until 7 a.m. today.
Congratulations, Erwin Valmoria Macua!
