Mayor and actor Richard Gomez is saddened by news of the death of acclaimed film and TV director Maryo J. delos Reyes.
Direk Maryo died on Saturday night, January 27, following a heart attack during a party in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.
In a Facebook post early today, January 28, Ormoc City Mayor Richard paid tribute to the late director, and uploaded some of their photos together, taken when he was just starting his showbiz career.
The 51-year-old actor/politician recalled his first movie project with Direk Maryo, entitled Hindi Mo Ako Kayang Tapakan (1984), which also starred Charo Santos-Concio and Gina Alajar, among others.
Aside from this film, Richard also worked with Direk Maryo in the '90s films Sa'yo Lamang (1995), Kahit Kailan (1996), and Linlang (1999).
Richard wrote, "It is a sad day today for Philippine cinema to see the passing of another great movie director, Maryo J. Delos Reyes.
"He was my first director in the movie Hindi Mo Ako Kayang Tapakan that top billed Ms. Charo Santos under Via Hoffman Productions."
Continuing, he said, "Direk Maryo shot my first scenes in the movie when I was a young boy together [with] Anjo Yllana and Nadia Montenegro.
"But Inday Bote with William Martinez and Maricel Soriano came out sooner than Hindi Mo Ako Kayang Tapakan and that officially became my first starring movie."
Towards the last part of his message, Richard revealed that Direk Maryo offered him a role for an upcoming movie project and said that he would have wanted to work again with the acclaimed director.
"We will miss you direk. We were just reading a beautifully written script that was sent to me and Pia Campos by your office to consider a part." (Pia Campos is Richard's manager.)
"Sayang I thought we will be able to do one more movie together. We will miss you," Richard ended.
