Film/TV director Joyce Bernal will not get any professional fee when she directs the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Duterte this Monday, July 23.
The director known for her blockbuster rom-coms told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and select members of the entertainment press how she would go about directing the SONA for the first time.
"Hindi naman malaking bagay yun pero tinawag ako para i-direk siya.
"Bakit ako magpapabayad?" she said during the July 21 story conference of Spring Films' Marawi movie titled Children of the Lake.
Who tapped her to direct the 2018 SONA?
"Si Sir Martin Andanar," disclosed Direk Joyce, referring to the current Presidential Communications Secretary.
Did Secretary Andanar give her any specific instructions for handling the SONA?
She said, "Sabi niya, very spontaneous si President. We wanna capture that.
"Kung may mga matitira o masasaktan, we wanna capture everything."
Before she directs the 2018 SONA, Direk Joyce had two requests.
First, she said, "Gusto ko siyang ma-meet.
"Gusto ko siyang maramdaman.
"Hindi naman docu yung gagawin.
"Yung coverage ko sa kanya, from the moment na bumaba siya ng chopper, going there, waiting, then the speech.
"After ng speech, wala na po akong coverage."
The female director also made another request that she believes will benefit Filipino viewers.
"Gusto ko nga sana may subtitle na Tagalog just in case English yung speech niya," she told PEP.ph during the interview conducted at the Cornerstone office in Quezon City.
"Kasi last year, Ingles, e.
"Gusto ko sana yung ganun pero nag-a-adlib kasi si President, e.
"Gusto ko yung tipong naglalaba ka, kahit hindi mo naririnig, nababasa mo yung sinasabi ng Presidente."
What would be her directing style for this year's SONA?
"Siguro dadagdagan ko lang yung mga beat ng shots, lalo na pag nagkukuwento siya, yung interest ng mga nanonood ay nandun pa rin at hindi bumaba," she emphasized.
How would she deal with the cursing often done by President Duterte when he gives speeches?
"Ganun talaga. Alam na natin.
"Kahit patungan ko ng music yun," she shrugged.
Did Direk Joyce watch last year's SONA directed by Brillante Mendoza?
"Kasi same location kami, e."
Will she employ similar strategies such as those used by Direk Brillante in the past?
What made her agree to serve as the director of President Duterte's third SONA?
"Di ba, ayaw ko na mag-direct? Pero ito, gusto ko," she stressed.
She then pointed out how directing the SONA is a very different experience compared to directing actors in an entertainment project.
She revealed, "Iba yung direction, you get to talk [to the person]. 'Ano yung gusto mo?'
"Yung intention niya at intention ko, dapat magsama.
"But because wala kaming usap na ganun, research lang ng mga pinagsasabi niya."
Asked if she feels nervous about helming the 2018 SONA, Direk Joyce admitted, "Honestly, pag nagtatrabaho na kami, yun na yung pinag-uusapan na yung mga what we can do and what we can't do.
"Malaki ang part na we can't do kasi may protocol, e.
"Presidente po, e.
"Hindi siya artista na puwede nating i-immerse, tampalin para magkaroon ng emotion."
Direk Joyce is currently working on the Sarah Geronimo film Miss Granny.
