Catriona Gray welcomes Miss Universe's decision to allow trans woman to compete

Muling idiniin ni Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray na pabor siya sa pagsali ng transgender woman na si Angela Ponce ng Spain sa Miss Universe 2018, na gaganapin sa Bangkok, Thailand sa December.

Ito ay sa kabila ng marami pa rin ang hindi sang-ayon sa pagsali ng isang trans woman sa prestihiyosong beauty pageant at iginigiit na dapat ay natural-born women lamang ang makasali rito.

“I understand the argument, I really do, and sometimes people are just traditionalist and they take it as something that has been ever since, and should continue that way,” pahayag ni Catriona sa video na ipinost ni Aya Tantiango Miura nitong Miyerkules, September 19.

Pero naniniwala ang Pinay beauty queen na magandang desisyon ang pagiging kandidata si Angela sa isang international beauty pageant para sa mga kababaihan.

“I think it’s a step in the right direction to be more inclusive, and I think it educates us as a society on the whole to further understand people.

“I see nothing wrong with it, really.”

Dagdag pa ni Catriona, dahil kay Angela ay mas magkakaroon ng awareness hinggil sa mga problema at hamon na pinagdadaanan ng mga miyembro ng LGBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual) community.

Pahayag niya, “The problems and challenges that they do face and have to overcome, whether it be social stigma or even opportunities in the work place or just existing in our society in general, like, what are their needs, what do we as a society fall short in providing them.

“And I think it’s wonderful that we have someone to be their spokesperson, to give us really a first-hand account of what’s it like to be on the forefront of all of that, so I’m happy for her.

“She earned the right, just like me, to represent her country.

“She went through the whole process, so we should celebrate that and I can’t wait to meet her.”
