Simone Nadine Bornilla, Miss Marinduque and Miss Universe Philippines 2021 candidate, has always been open about being raised by gay parents. Her biological father Jumel Bornilla (right photo, far right) and stepdad Manix Genabe have been a couple for 13 years. Jumel says his love story has a huge similarity to GMA-7's 2013 teleserye My Husband's Lover.

Sambit ni Jumel, “That’s our story."

Patuloy na kuwento ni Jumel, “I don’t know where the writer got the plot, or maybe we’re not the only one who’s on the same predicament.

“But, you know, the way it was told is very similar to our story, almost 98%.

“Even the birthdate of Tom Rodriguez’s character, coincided with my birthday [July 2].”

THE WIFE, THE SECRET, THE INNER BATTLE

After six years, taong 2003, sumunod si Simone.

Ani Jumel, "There’s this force inside me trying to fight for it. The society dictates that there’s a certain standard.

“I was afraid to be associated as different. I was afraid to be left out.

“My ex-wife discovered eventually what I was going through, me being gay.”

Sabi ng physician, “We tried our very best to work it out, but to no avail.

“Believe me, she’s a good person. But she needed to be loved and I couldn’t provide that love.

“It was a painful breakup. We were young then. Emotions were running wild.”

Nakatulong daw ang paghihiwalay nila ng ex-wife niya para mag-grow at mag-mature sila, “Now we’re both happy with our own partners.”

Sagot niya, “Living in this society full of standards pushes us, human beings, to create a persona based on the requirement dictated to us by the society.”

A NEW LOVE BLOOMS

Kuwento ni Jumel, “They called me from another room since I am the only doctor in the group.”

Patuloy ni Jumel, “Luckily, there’s an available intravenous steroid ampoule, which I did administer right away, which prompted relief of his signs and symptoms."

“The following day, I received a call from the lobby of Makati Med, where I go on duty, that there’s a guy looking for me.”

Pagsapit ng Sabado, ayon pa kay Jumel, “We’re already looking for a place. And come Sunday, we’re settled in a one-bedroom apartment in Makati.”

Nagsama na sila sa iisang bubong.

EXPLAINING TO THE KIDS

“I was afraid that he might get turned off. I also thought that this relationship might not last, since we just met and decided to live together right away in a span of one week.”

Ani Jumel, “We didn’t sugarcoat anything. He was introduced as my partner and I am lucky indeed to have emotionally intelligent kids.

“Jesus Paolo was 10, while Simone was 4, when they met their Daddy Manix.”

EXPERIENCING DISCRIMINATION

Kuwento ni Jumel, “She was Grade 8 when we decided to enroll her in a Catholic international school in preparation for her Australian boarding school.”

Paliwanag ni Jumel, “Unfortunately, if you’re a graduate of medicine in the Philippines, you’re stuck here, and you cannot practice anywhere in the world."

Himutok ni Jumel, “We were disheartened, frustrated, depressed and furious.

"We cannot fathom the idea of them denying Simone of the opportunity because her father is gay.

“Because her parents are separated and his father is now living with another man.

“It’s not her fault."

Pakiramdam raw ni Jumel ay pinagkaitan ang kanyang anak ng magandang kinabukasan, “just because she belongs to a gay family.”

MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE

“Gay people are capable of giving love and that includes the capability of taking care of a human being, rearing a child, may be blood-related or adopted.”

Bilang member naman ng LGBTQ+ community, nais iparating ni Jumel na, “We, the LGBTQ +, are not demanding OUTRIGHT acceptance.

“We just want to inform everyone that we can all co-exist, not because of our sexual preferences, but simply because we’re humans.”

Bagamat maaaring may dahilan ang eskuwelahan para tanggihan si Simone, umaasa si Jumel na sana’y maisip nila na “a person should not be denied or discriminated because of sexual preferences or family background."

Dugtong niya, “Everyone should at least be given a chance. Who knows, that chance given to that person can give a significant impact not only to our nation, but to the rest of the universe.”

MANIX, THE PARTNER, THE OTHER FATHER

“I was totally shocked and surprised, but in a good way,” ani Manix.

“I grew up in a broken family and I’m an only child.

“I’m in love with the concept of family since I never really had one.

“The only concern during that time was I would be a step-parent.

“Would the kids love me or will they hate me?

“But, luckily, we all jive together and function as a normal family.

“To friends, I always jokingly say that if there’s instant pancit, there’s also instant family.Haha.”

Lahad niya, “It wasn’t really hard to decide since are friends and family are very accepting of us.

"We never really felt discriminated amongst our colleagues and peers.”

“I tried to be their friend more than their stepdad. Although I’m the ‘bad cop,’ they know that they’re somewhat spoiled.

“If they want something, it’s me who they go to. The only thing that I require of them is to do well in school."

Daddy Manix, Simone, Daddy Jumel, and Jesus Paolo

Mensahe pa ni Manix pagdating sa pagiging gay, magulang, at partner:

“Love knows no boundaries. Acceptance is the first step into having a great relationship with yourself and your loved ones.

“Do not be afraid to love. Be compassionate so you’ll always see the reason of chaos and it’s meaning.

“In raising kids, you need to be selfless.

“Everything you do and want should be for the children’s well-being.”
