Google has just released its annual “Year in Search,” highlighting the 2017 top trending searches in the Philippines.
This year’s list shows how much Filipinos stay tuned to trending topics.
Further proof of the enduring popularity of Korean pop culture among Filipinos is this year’s list of trending television shows.
Goblin, The Legend of the Blue Sea, Love in the Moonlight, Weightlifting Fairy, and While You Were Sleeping are among the top trending Korean TV shows this year.
Here are the most-searched TV shows in 2017:
1. The Voice Teens
ABS-CBN aired the first edition of The Voice Teens this year, making it the most-searched program in 2017. Jona Soquite of Team Sarah Geronimo became the first ever The Voice Teens Champion.
2. 13 Reasons Why
This American drama-mystery web TV series became controversial for tackling the topic of suicide.
3. Goblin
Korean actor Gong Yoo portrayed the 939-year-old goblin who has been looking for his bride. The immortal man needs his bride in order to end his curse.
4. The Legend of the Blue Sea
Topbilled by Lee Min Ho, The Legend of the Blue Sea tells the love story of a con-artist and a mermaid who travels across the ocean to find him.
5. Love in the Moonlight
Starring Park Bo-Gum and Kim Yoo-jung, a crown prince falls in love with his political eunuch, who is really a woman posing as a man.
6. Encantadia
GMA-7's requel (remake + sequel) of Encantadia made it to the most searched shows in 2017. The epic telefantasya became controversial when Kylie Padilla became pregnant and had to be pulled out from the show and her Amihan character was replaced by Arra San Agustin.
7. Weightlifting Fairy
Topbilled by Lee Sung-Kyung, this coming-of-age sports drama is inspired by the life of Olympic gold-medalist Jang Mi-ran.
8. While You Were Sleeping
This South Korean TV show stars Lee Jong-suk, Bae Suzy, Lee Sang-yeob, Jung Hae-in and Ko Sung-hee. In this series, Bae Suzy's character is able to see the future deaths of others in her dreams. She does not know when the deaths will happen, but she tries to stop her dreams from becoming reality.
9. Game of Thrones
This medieval fantasy epic, which is now on its Season 7, ended by showing how the White Walkers have already penetrated the Wall.
10. Scarlet Heart
Another South Korean series makes it to the list this year. During a total solar eclipse, a 25-year-old 21st-century woman, Go Ha-jin (Lee Ji-eun), is transported back in time to the Goryeo Dynasty. She wakes up in the year 941, in the body of Hae Soo and there, she encounters the many royal princes of the ruling Wang family.
