According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency, 615,019 Filipinos went abroad to work in 1991. One of them left in April to go to Japan, a 22-year old girl who studied modern dance for three months just to be accepted as an entertainer. Her name was Maricris Sioson.

But several months after she left, Maricris' lifeless body was shipped back to the Philippines.

The death certificate issued by the hospital where Maricris was brought to in Japan stated that she died of hepatitis. However, when her family opened her coffin, they discovered bruises and stab wounds on her body.

What really happened to Maricris? Did she die or was she killed?

Helmed by indie filmmaker Ben Garcia, watch a dramatization of Maricris' life that ended in her mysterious death.

The circumstances surrounding her death even inspired Regal Entertainment to produce the 1993 film Maricris Sioson Story - Japayuki, which had a screenplay written by Lualhati Bautista.

This Thursday, April 16, join Arnold Clavio investigate questions of the past on Case Unclosed.
