NHCP complains about Madonna's use of Philippine flag in Rebel Heart concert

According to NHCP Heraldry Section Chief Teodoro Atienza, Madonna violated R.A. 8491, which prohibits a person from wearing the Philippine flag as a costume. He was set to file a complaint against the American singer before the Bureau of Immigration. But Madonna had already arrived in Singapore last night, February 26.

Our Philippine flag was just a "balabal" to Madonna.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) cried foul over the wrongful use of the Philippine flag during the American singer's Rebel Heart concert in Manila last Wednesday, February 24.

Teodoro Atienza, chief of the Heraldry Section of NHCP, said that Madonna violated the Republic Act No. 8491, which prohibits a person from wearing the Philippine flag as a costume or uniform.

“Ginawa pong katawa-tawa ang ating watawat.

“Ginawang tapis.

“Ginawang balabal ni Ms. Madonna,” said Tedoro in an interview on radio dzBB yesterday, February 26.

Teodoro also noted that the Philippine flag, which Madonna wore as a cape of sorts, slipped from the American singer's shoulders and slightly touched the floor in one of her production numbers.

He said, "Lumapat pa po yung flag sa stage.

“Nasasaad po sa batas natin na bawal lumapat sa sahig [ang watawat]."

Teodoro further stated that ignorance of the law is not an excuse for Madonna and her producers to disrespect the Philippine flag.

He mentioned his plan to file a complaint against Madonna before the Bureau of Immigration, and it may lead to her possible deportation or lifetime ban from entering the country.

But on her Instagram post last night, February 26, Madonna announced to her fans that she had arrived in Singapore, the next stop for her Rebel Heart world tour.

Madonna also wrote in the said post, "Singapore we are here at last!! #rebelhearttour and so excited."
