Tommy Esguerra admitted that his affection for ex-girlfriend Miho Nishida grew cold months before they broke up.
They were in a relationship for one and a half years, until they released a joint statement last April 26 that they have called it quits.
“It’s been months. I feel like it’s been months that we were not happy,” Tommy said in the May 11 episode of ABS-CBN morning talk show Magandang Buhay.
“Unti-unti, I’ve been pulling away from the family para the day it happens, it's not that sudden change.”
Short of saying that he was the one who initiated the breakup, Tommy said that the split was a “one-sided” decision.
Asked why their relationship did not work out, Tommy answered, “I don't think it's just one reason.
“It's a culmination of many things. We have different values, different morals.
"I guess, in the long run, that it wouldn't play out well."
There were talks that Tommy merely used Miho to advance his career.
Miho was Pinoy Big Brother 737's (PBB) Big Winner, while Tommy was the Second Big Placer back in 2015.
But on Magandang Buhay’s May 6 episode, Miho clarified that Tommy’s love for her before was real.
Tommy, for his part, said that he doesn’t let other people’s negative feedback put him down.
“People can’t tell anything about my relationship because they don’t know everything.
“It didn’t matter to me.”
Magandang Buhay co-host Karla Estrada said that it’s unfair that Tommy gets accused of using Miho for career’s sake since the ex-couple joined PBB at the same time.
While it is not clear what Tommy thinks about that issue, he said that it’s okay if people would sympathize with Miho more than with him.
“She's gonna need it more than me. At least I can hold it down.”
PERSONAL DIFFERENCES. Miho previously said that “language barrier” was a big hurdle in her relationship with Tommy.
Tommy agreed that it was a problem for him and Miho.
But he added, “I tried to listen. I don’t speak straight Tagalog, but I understand it fairly well. Minsan it gets lost in translation.”
The 22-year-old Tommy also said that he fought for his relationship with Miho from the beginning to the end.
But he added, “But there just comes a point when you will realize that there's nowhere to go.”
Tommy was also asked about the status of his relationship with Miho’s daughter Aimi who saw him as a father figure.
“Ang hirap talaga. That’s the thing about this relationship,” said Tommy, hinting about what seems to be a bone of contention between him and Miho.
“From the very beginning, I’ve been saying I want to keep an arm's length-distance.
“I don’t wanna become a part of Aimi's life where she sees me as the father figure or she calls me daddy, and then I leave one day because it doesn’t work out.
“That sucks. It’s selfish.”
NO RECONCILIATION. At one point in the interview, Tommy got emotional as he explained that it’s not as if he can fall out of love with Miho easily, even now that that they have broken up.
But he admitted that a reconciliation with Miho is not on his mind.
He also said that he has no communication with Miho since they called it quits.
“After the breakup, I really want that space.
“It’s the hardest thing, letting go and moving forward.”
