It was a sweet reunion for John Lloyd Cruz, 34, and his perennial leading lady Bea Alonzo, 29, at the Star Magic Ball 2017.

The two were spotted giving each other a tight hug while the party was in full swing inside the Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-La Hotel last night, September 30.

As soon as their photo made the rounds online, avid fans of the Bea-John Lloyd love team felt "kilig"—loosely translated: a thrill—seeing their idols in what appears to be an unguarded moment.

It was in November 2015 when John Lloyd and Bea last worked together in Star Cinema’s A Second Chance, the sequel to their iconic Popoy and Basha movie, One More Chance.

ALLEGED ROMANCE. That was around the same time rumors appeared that they were romantically involved with each other.

By January 2016, reports of John Lloyd breaking up with Angelica Panganiban, and Bea calling it quits with Zanjoe Marudo, further fanned speculations that the A Second Chance co-stars were an item.

There were also reported sightings of them allegedly cozying up at the 2015 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID shoot and at the January 2015 "One Kapamilya Go" tour in Japan.

But in a February 2016 interview, John Lloyd flatly denied that they were ever an item, saying, “Magkaibigan po kami.”

Bea also echoed John Lloyd’s response when she was asked about their rumored romance.

The actress said in an April 2016 interview, "Magkaibigan naman talaga kami ni John Lloyd.

"I mean, we've been working together for so many years.

"Normal naman yata kasi ako yung huli niyang nakatrabaho."

Spanning fifteen years of onscreen partnership, John Lloyd and Bea starred in nine movies and seven Kapamilya primetime series.

Some have also commented that they're still rooting for John Lloyd and Bea to become real-life sweethearts:

On the other hand, there were also some who alluded to the elephant in the room: John Lloyd's controversial-but-unconfirmed dalliance with sexy star Ellen Adarna:

The PEP take on this is: Bea gave that hug to John Lloyd because this is the time the actor, who is beleaguered after his recent public show of affection with a starlet, needs it.

Or this can be put another way: John Lloyd gave Bea that hug because this is the time the actor needs it, and Bea has always been a supportive friend.

Unknown to the public, stars often need each other to get through their very-public controversies.

Brave as they are about facing the music—John Lloyd says apologies-but-no-sorries—fact is, the stars hurt when people think badly of their private actions.

And, although disappointing to Popoy-Basha fans, PEP has to say that it doesn't think there's any romance in this at all.

Bea is openly in a mutually-exclusive relationship with Gerald Anderson, who came as her date to the ball.

John Lloyd, for his part, is currently being linked romantically to his Home Sweetie Home co-star Ellen Adarna.

The 29-year-old Cebuana had attended previous annual Star Magic red-carpet events, but was quite noticeably missing in action last night.
