May permiso ng ina at mga kapatid ni Julia Barretto ang desisyon nitong tanggapin ang sultry movie project na Expensive Candy.

Ito ay dahil nagustuhan nila ang Between Maybes, ang pelikulang pinagbidahan ng aktres at ng kanyang boyfriend na si Gerald Anderson noong 2019 na mula sa panulat at direksiyon ni Jason Paul Laxamana.

Bago napasakamay ni Julia ang script ng Expensive Candy, sinabi muna niya ang kuwento ng pelikula sa kanyang nanay na si Marjorie Barretto, na agad namang pumayag.

“Nag-usap kami and she gave me the go signal.

"Actually, everybody was really excited from the very beginning and, like I said, they really loved Between Maybes at yung naging collaboration namin ni Direk JP.

“In fact, they’re all gonna be in the premiere night. Sila ang unang manonood,” pahayag ni Julia sa presscon ng Expensive Candy kahapon, August 31, 2022.

Ipinagmamalaki ng aktres ang Expensive Candy, na ikinukumpara sa Pretty Woman, ang 1990 blockbuster romantic comedy film nina Julia Roberts at Richard Gere.

Saad ni Julia, “Yung Pretty Woman, it’s more than just… ano rin yung hiningi kay Julia Roberts. It’s also the love story that napanood natin so I always wanted to tackle a story na talagang isinu-showcase yung romance in that angle.

“I feel like kapag mina-manifest mo talaga yung isang bagay, ibibigay sa 'yo ng Diyos so parang na-attract ko siya.”

Mapapanood ang Expensive Candy sa mga sinehan simula sa September 14. Ito ang pangalawang pelikula ng Viva Films na magkakaroon ng theatrical release sa panahon ng pandemya.

Ang Maid in Malacañang ang unang proyekto ng Viva Films na ipinalabas sa mga sinehan noong August 3 at pinilahan ng manonood.

Pero nilinaw ni Laxamana na walang pressure sa kanyang tapatan o higitan ang box-office gross ng kontrobersiyal na pelikula ni Darryl Yap.

“Walang pressure na matapatan ang gross ng Maid in Malacañang because Maid in Malacañang, parang very timely, katatapos lang ng eleksyon.

“Ako, I’m just happy now na we are contributing sa gusto nating mangyari lahat na bumalik na yung mga tao sa sinehan.

"So, hindi ako nag-e-expect ng blockbuster pero gusto kong maging parte ng movement na babalik tayo sa sinehan,” paglilinaw ni Laxamana.
