Gerald Anderson was a goofball at 17, and didn't take his stint in Pinoy Big Brother 14 years ago seriously.

There was even a time when he incurred 26 violations all in one day.

Gerald, now 31, has since mellowed and grown into a serious actor with a string of critically acclaimed TV and movie roles to his name.

He said in an interview with Boy Abunda in 2019, "It’s more of gratitude, e.

"I’m just thankful sa lahat ng opportunities na binibigay sa akin, and I don’t want to waste them.”

Gerald’s full name is Gerald Randolph Anderson Jr.

He was born on March 7, 1989, in Subic, Zambales, to Gerald Anderson Sr., an American instructor, and Evangeline Opsima, a Filipina businesswoman.

He has a younger brother named Kenneth Anderson, a basketball player.

Gerald was three years old when the Anderson family migrated to the United States, first to San Antonio,Texas, then to Springfield, Missouri.

They came back to the Philippines when Gerald was 14, finally settling in General Santos City.

Gerald finished his elementary education in Texas. He received his high-school diploma in 2011 in the Philippines via the Alternative Learning System of the Department of Education.

Gerald Anderson PBB

With his good looks, Gerald was introduced as the "Amboy Hottie ng Gensan" when he entered the first season of PBB Teen Edition in April 23, 2006.

He didn’t do so well in the beginning as he kept breaking house rules, such as ignoring the wake-up call and not getting up.

On Day 10, Kuya punished him by making him stay in bed all day.

On Day 12, he accumulated 26 violations during a dance task.

When Kuya announced in the early part of the show that one of the housemates would be evicted because of continuous violations, Gerald was sure it was going to be him.

He was spared, but Gerald continued to break rules up to the final days of the reality show.

When judgment came down to the Final Four, Gerald and the three other remaining housemates—Kim Chiu, Mikee Lee, and Clare Cabiguin—were tasked to collect the garbage at a beach in Alaminos, Pangasinan.

In the contest, where the winner was the one who collected the heaviest load of garbage, Gerald allegedly cheated by adding stones to his pile.

Gerald was supposed to be force evicted owing to the infraction, but again he was given another chance.

In the end, he finished as the third big placer during PBB Teen Edition's Big Night on June 3, 2006.

In an interview with Jeepney TV in 2017, Gerald said he was proud of his stay in PBB, “It was one of the proudest moments of my life na nagawa ko ito.

"Isa akong probinsyano na taga-Gen San and ngayon ay nandito ako at nagawa ko lahat iyan.”

Season 1 of PBB Teen Edition led to Kimerald, the love team of Kim and Gerald that would launch their showbiz careers, swiftly and successfully at that.

In 2006, with the viewing public clamoring for more Kimerald shows after PBB, the Kapamilya network put them in anthology shows such as Love Spell, Your Song, Star Magic Presents, and Maalaala Mo Kaya.

In July of the same year, they were featured in a sitcom called Aalog-alog. It was their first regular show together.

Two months later, in September, they became part of an ensemble cast for a comedy film called First Day High.

In 2007 and 2008, Gerald and Kim, by this time real-life partners, headlined two teleseryes—Sana Maulit Muli and My Girl. They also starred in the movie I’ve Fallen for You and in the "Class Picture" episode of Shake, Rattle & Roll X.

But while they remained hugely popular, their projects as a love team at that point fell short of expectations. Both Sana Maulit Muli and My Girl, for example, had less than 80 episodes each. I’ve Fallen For You grossed 35.9 million pesos.

But in a phenomenal turnaround in 2009, their teleserye Tayong Dalawa that premiered on January 19 was a prime-time hit throughout most of its airing. It ended on September 25 after 178 episodes.

In Tayong Dalawa, Gerald played David “JR” Garcia, a soldier who fell in love with Kim’s character, Audrey King. But Audrey was also being pursued by JR’s secret twin, David “Dave” Garcia, played by Jake Cuenca.

The love triangle’s story was complicated by warring families, crime syndicates, and vengeful matriarchs.

Tayong Dalawa further catapulted Gerald and Kim to major stars. Their next movie Paano Na Kaya (2010) grossed more than 100 million pesos.

Unfortunately, the Kimerald tandem wasn’t meant to last.

On October 12, 2010, they shocked everyone with their emotional outburst during their presscon for the movie Till My Heartaches End.

It turned out the two had broken up in real life, both admitting they were not on good terms.

In the following month, Gerald acknowledged he was dating Bea Alonzo.

After the breakdown of his screen partnership with Kim, Gerald’s management decided to pair him with other actresses.

In 2011, he made two movies with Sarah Geronimo: Catch Me, I’m In Love and Won’t Last a Day Without You.

Then in 2015, he shot Halik sa Hangin with Julia Montes.

In 2016 and 2017, he starred in Always be My Maybe and Can We Still Be Friends? with Arci Muñoz.

And in 2018, he was the leading man in My Perfect You, which starred Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach.

But none of these on-screen tandems made a splash more than his partnership with Bea Alonzo in 2016’s How to Be Yours. The critically acclaimed romantic comedy projected the undeniable chemistry between Gerald and Bea, and many approved of their budding relationship.

They seemed to be attached at the hip for about three years.

About Gerald, Bea posted on Instagram in March 2019. “You are a wonderful man. Happy birthday, babe. You are my great love story.”

About Bea, Gerald said in an interview with Boy Abunda in May 2019, “Siya ang tipo ng babaeng alam kung ano'ng gusto niya at kung ano'ng deserve niya. For the last two, almost three years, think I've become a better man pagdating sa pagiging isang partner.”

But trouble struck in July 2019 when Bea went public with news that Gerald had dropped out of her sight. The Kapamilya actress gave clues: Gerald wasn’t being honest, he had ghosted her, he had been seeing another girl behind her back.

The girl was Julia Barretto, Gerald’s co-star in the film Between Maybes.

Gerald explained the ghosting issue in an interview with ABS-CBN in August 2019.

According to him, he and Bea had a big fight that made him decide to avoid her for a while.

He said, “Then yung ending ang realization na hindi na siya masyadong healthy, and you're just hurting each other. Na ayaw mo na talaga.

"After that, you have to stay strong. Iwas muna sa communication.”

Gerald and Julia have never opened up about the extent of their relationship, but netizens have closely followed their activities.

Gerald is also focusing on his career. He knows that he has to make an effort to keep his place in showbiz.

He told Boy Abunda in the 2019 interview, “Walang madali. After PBB, oo sinuwerte talaga ako. Pero hindi ako magtatagal nang ganito katagal just waiting for things to happen.”

Since 2013, Gerald has been getting roles off the rom-com track. In that year, he had a major role in On The Job, a neo-noir action film that tackled the prison gun-for-hire business and corruption in the Philippine National Police.

He won the Best Supporting Actor award from Gawad Pasado for this movie. He was also nominated for Best Actor in FAMAS.

In 2015, he was the lead actor in El Brujo, an action film directed by indie director Tikoy Aguiluz.

In 2017, he starred in the action film AWOL, where he played the leader of an elite sniper group. The film was an entry to the 2017 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

In 2020, in his teleserye A Soldier’s Heart, he played an IT expert who chose to be a soldier after a tragedy.

Next year, he’s slated to play a doctor in a love triangle with two politicians, played by Yam Concepcion and JM de Guzman. The show will be titled Init sa Magdamag.

Looking back, Gerald has always been thankful, “I became a man because of showbiz,” he said in the Boy Abunda interview.

“I became responsible for my family, my mom, my siblings. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without showbiz.”

Asidr from Kim, Bea, and Julia, Gerald also had a two-year relationship with Maja Salvador.

He was also linked to Pia while they were filming My Perfect You.
