Isa si Kristofer King sa masasabing underrated actors ng kanyang henerasyon. Nakagawa na siya ng ilang di-matatawarang independent films ng mga award-winning filmmakers tulad nina Mario O'Hara, Adolfo Alix Jr., at ang 2009 Cannes Best Director na si Brillante "Dante" Mendoza.
Kabilang sa mga dekalibreng pelikula na nakasama si Kristofer ay ang Masahista, Babae sa Breakwater, Tirador, ang kontobersiyal na Serbis, at iba pa.
Ngayong 2011, may panibagong indie film na muling magpapakita ng husay ni Kristofer, ang Taksikab na unang full-length directorial job ni Direk Archie del Mundo, na siya ring sumulat ng script.
Dito ay gumaganap si Kristofer sa lead role bilang isang bisexual taxi driver. Sa kanya iikot ang istorya sa loob ng isang araw lamang.
Nakapanayam ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Direk Archie, at natanong sa kanya ang tungkol sa pinagmulan ng materyal niyang Taksikab.
"Noong 1996, na-inspire ako sa series of books ni Tony Perez, yung Cubao Anthology, kaya sinimulan kong isulat ang screenplay kong May Hinihintay Ka Ba? Second year college ako noon.
"Ang istorya ay umiikot sa isang male prostitute na may HIV pero mahilig pa rin itong makipag-orgy. Nung matapos ko ang script, ready na akong i-submit yun sa isa sa mga scriptwriting contests pero unfortunately, nawala ko ang only copy ko.
"It was disheartening at first, pero ginawa ko yun bilang sign na something must be done to make the material much better. Since gusto kong maging mas authentic at realistic yun, the research becomes more of a life journey to me.
"I involved myself with my characters and one by one, I got introduced sa kanila sa maraming mga lugar, hindi lang Cubao.
"Basically, my material has become a collection of road characters na mga na-meet ko from 1996 to 2008, kaya masasabi kong ang screenplay ng Taksikab ay 14 years in the making.
"Noong August 2009 ko lang nagawa ang unang draft, na dapat ay short film lang. Dalawang possible producers pumili sa script, pero hindi nag-materialize."
Hanggang sa na-meet ni Direk Archie si Mr. Ding Buenaventura, ang producer ng indie films na D' Survivors at Presa, at nagustuhan niya ang material ng Taksikab.
"Doon na ako nag-decide na i-redraft ang screenplay into full-length kahit wala pang go-signal.
"Ang istorya ngayon ay na-center na sa parehong young male prostitute na sinusundo gabi-gabi ng isang taxi driver. Best friends at roommates sila.
"Nang ang taxi driver ay nagdesisyon nang ibulgar ang kanyang nararamdaman para sa prostitute, nagkataon namang yung araw ring 'yon, ang nasabing male prosti ay nagdesisyong bumalik na lang sa probinsiya upang wakasan na ang trabaho nito bilang prosti," kuwento ni Direk Archie.
THE CAST. Ayon pa rin sa kanya, ang lead role na David ay kinakailangang magpakita ng two sides of a character. Ang challenge ay kung paano niya masi-shift ang dalawang persona na yun sa isang araw lang.
"He must be very well-rounded, and as an actor he must be physically and emotionally convincing," aniya.
Paano na-cast si Kristofer King for the lead role?
"Noong short film ang Taksikab, first choice ko was actually Neil Ryan Sese, pero hindi ko alam na nagka-pelikula na pala siya noon na driver ang role niya.
"Tapos noon, naisip ko si Kristofer King. Ang hirap niyang kontakin! At noong finally ay nakontak ko na, I don't think he was very interested at first."
"While shooting Ben and Sam [na screenplay niya rin], na-meet ko ang isang actor at kinuwento ko sa kanya ang story ng Taksikab at nagustuhan niya agad, kinu-convince ko pa nga siya at the last minute nung akala namin ay negative na si Kristofer, pero nag-aalangan sa sex scenes required for the role yung actor na 'yon.
Kuwento ng writer-director, maraming actors na na-consider. Hanggang sa pumunta sa auditions si Kristofer.
"Yun lang ang unang pagkakataon na naging unanimous kami with our choice. We were blown away by his convincing audition."
Aniya, ang mga roles nina Marife Necesito at Martin delos Santos ay sinulat niya para sa kanila. "I watched them in the international film Mammoth where they played mother and son.
"Si Kevin Vitug, may very challenging role inspired by Filipino-American serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Vitug belongs to the extended clan of the Ejercitos."
Inamin ni Direk Archie na ang isa sa pinaka-mahirap i-cast ay yung young prostitute.
"Gusto talaga sana namin ay yung fresh at raw na may pagkaprobinsyano. The name of his character is Bojong. Newcomer Adrian Sebastian, a former Cappuccino Boys member, was chosen.
"I'm really thankful na all my lead actors came to the set well prepared. Wala akong narinig na reklamo. Naintindihan nila lahat ang gusto ko mangyari, given the limitation of a small production.
"I have to specially commend Kristofer for giving his best for this project. Minsan, kahit di na niya trabaho, tinutulungan niya kami.
"Most of the people I hired for this project are my friends that's why they helped me at hindi ako pinahirapan sa budget and all," ani Direk Archie.
CHALLENGES FOR FIRST-TIME FILMMAKER. Kumusta naman ang experience ni Direk Archie sa kanyang kauna-unahang padidirek ng full-length film?
"Ang pinakamalaking challenge for me as a first time director ay kung paano i-adjust ang material sa budget without compromising its vision and artistic requirement.
"Ninety percent ng scenes require outdoor shots, kaya halos imposibleng magawa ito ng production team ko, pero naka-survive kami. I have my wonderful team to thank for their 'never say die' attitude.
"When I watched Alfred Hitchcock's Rope a long time ago, I always knew I wanted the structure of my film to be somehow similar with what he achieved in his film.
"Taksikab is shot in 'extreme' real time and it would almost appear continuous in most sequences, without the cut. My cinematographer, Albert Banzon, painstakingly worked with me to somehow achieve this flow.
"Ang pinaka-challenging series of scenes to direct ay yung mga nagre-require ng actual travel time sa isang taxi, na puwedeng i-connect sa isa pang scene.
"Halimbawa, may pumalpak sa kalagitnaan ng shoot, kailangan naming magsimula uli. The whole experience is very rewarding for me, for all of us. No scene was easy to film, but we nailed it," pagmamalaki ni Direk Archie.
DIRECTOR'S PROFILE. Kuwento ni Direk Archie, "Noong high school, noong isusulat na ang tanong na "What I want to be" sa yearbook, I proudly wrote, "To be a Film Director" Akala ng mga classmates ko, nagbibiro ako.
"Hanggang sa ang pinakamalapit na bagay na ginawa ko para ma-realize yun ay ang pag-attend ng scriptwriting workshop with Emmanuel Dela Cruz, at dalawang sessions with Armando 'Bing' Lao noong 2009.
"Although, I took Communication Arts at the University of The East--the only time I learned the basics of filmmaking was during my two film subjects, and some occasional film and writing seminars.
Ayon sa kanya, inakala niyang hindi na niya maisasakatuparan ang pangarap niyang yun, kaya nag-settle siya sa first ambition niya sa buhay--ang maging teacher. "I tried to finish my masters habang nagwo-work ako full-time.
