Big band crooner Richard Poon is not afraid of competition; in fact, he welcomes it. "Maganda ang competition, it will
make you realize na you can't be too arrogant. Tipong reality check yun," says the male singer.
"I welcome it, walang problema sa akin," sabi pa niya. "Kaya namang walang
"For the longest time, ako lang yata ang
naglakas ng loob. So, I have proven na puwede pala. Nang makalusot ako, marami
natuloy ang nagsusunuran.
"I welcome that, kasi, naniniwala ako na immortal ang standards. But, standards, they are here to stay.
"Yung ganda ng standards, it would outlive all the fads now. Given another thirty more years, buhay pa rin ang standards," tuloy-tuloy na sabi pa ni Richard.
The crooner has hit the jackpot. Nag-double platinum ang I'll Take Care of You album niya, at sinundan na ito nang kaka-release
lang na For You.
I welcome younger people to get into standards," dugtong pa ni Richard.
"Ako naman, I like competition. Personally, I will never know how good I am until you compete with somebody very new.
Then, somebody strong comes along. Kaya maganda ang competition, it will make you realize na you can't be too arrogant. Tipong reality check yun.
"The only way to know how good you are is, kung magagaling ang mga kalaban mo. Gusto ko ‘yan. I love competition.
What is amazing about this crooner is his talent on giving new songs standard
arrangements. Pati old songs, parang nagagawa rin niyang bago.
"It's a God-given gift," sabi ni Richard. "Bata pa lang ako, I never understood, while listening to the radio of my mom, pinipihit mo yung bilog na may sinulid para mabago yung station.
"I would listen to 88.3 for jazz, 89.9 for pop, 96.3 for lite rock, go to 98.7 for classical, go to NU 107 for rock... lahat ‘yan, pinapakinggan ko.
Yun ang gift ko, kaya madali akong nakaka-shift to salsa, switch to bossa, I can even play rock on guitar.
"I can turn to big band, kasi I listen to jazz. I can take a jazz song and turn it into bossa. puwede akong mag-multi-genres dahil sa napapakinggan ko," sabi pa ng male singer.
