What’s the formula for a long lasting relationship? Showbiz megastar Sharon Cuneta and Senator Francis Pangilinan share their secret to their over-10 years of marriage.
In a rare television interview together, Sharon and Kiko provide a glimpse of how they have nurtured their relationship every day since their wedding on April 28, 1996.
“Brigade Siete yung first natin na magkasama tayo after the wedding e,” says Sharon, referring to the defunct GMA-7 news magazine program where they gave their first television interview as a married couple.
More than 10 years after, on November 24, the couple grants an exclusive interview to a GMA News and Public Affairs show—the “Chika Minute” showbiz segment of GMA-7’s 24 Oras.
The couple says in the interview that their secret lies in the "appreciation" and "respect" they have for one another.
For Sharon, she appreciates Kiko’s seriousness and his hands-on style of fathering to their children—Simone Francesca Emmanuelle (“Frankie”) and Mariel Daniella Sophia (“Miel”), not to mentionand Sharon's child with former actor Gabby Concepcion, KC Concepcion.
“I like his pagka-serious pagdating sa mga [family] matters. Seryoso siya. What you don’t see every single day e yung minsan super sungit,” Sharon says.
On the other hand, Kiko attributes it to respect. “Importante yung may respeto sa isa’t isa. Yun ang first and foremost.”
When asked about their plans for the Christmas season, Kiko said: “Usually, Christmas Eve sa kanila. Tapos hanggang Noche Buena sa Cuneta side. Tapos Christmas lunch naman sa Pangilinan side.”
While they spend quality time with each other, both Sharon and Kiko pursue separate interests. As Kiko keeps himself busy with matters of the State, Sharon maintains an active showbiz career, including a weekly talk show. The Megastar also has her hands full with distance education at the University of the Philippines Open University.
Because of academic pressures as a result of her online education, Sharon said it was the first time in 20 years that she forgot Christmas was nearing. “Second sem just started, and first time over twenty years, nalimot ko Pasko.”
Together, husband and wife are currently endorsing Lucky Me, an instant food line.
