Ploning, the Philippine entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category in this year's Oscar Awards, failed to make the next round of eliminations before the announcement of the five final nominees.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nine films eligible for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year. These nine films were chosen from 65 eligible films from different countries, including the Philippine's Ploning.

Unfortunately, Ploning—starring Judy Ann Santos and directed by Dante "Nico" Garcia—did not make the cut.

According to a report by Susan King in theenvelope.latimes.com, several hundred Los Angeles-based members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted for their six top choices among the 65 eligible films, while the three titles were selected by Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Executive committee

Golden-Globe winner Waltz With Bashir from Israel is one of the nine films advancing to the next round of voting. The other eight are: Revanche (Austria), The Necessities of Life (Canada), The Class (France), The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany), Departures (Japan), Tear This Heart Out (Mexico), Everlasting Moments (Sweden), and 3 Monkeys (Turkey).

This short list will be narrowed down to five nominees by specially selected committees, both in Los Angeles and New York, who will spend this weekend screening three films per day.

The nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 22.

Judy Ann Santos, also the co-producer of Ploning, had lobbied arduously for her film's Oscar bid. The actress and her friends held fundraising events—like Damit Para Kay Ploning, Plato Para Kay Ploning, and Laro Para Kay Ploning—to help the film's cause. This Sunday, January 18, ABS-CBN will even air a TV special titled Pangarap ni Ploning on Sunday's Best.

Ploning also got P2.5 million from Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). Its filmmakers also hired a highly-recommended public relations company, Murray Weissman and Associates, to increase the film's chances.

Juday and Direk Dante's efforts to make Ploning the first-ever Filipino film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Language category of Oscars is admirable, but it was still not enough for the Academy voters.

The Philippine's quest for that elusive recognition remains a dream for our filmmakers.

Germany's entry, DER BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX, is based on the nonfiction book of Stefan Aust, a former editor-in-chief of Germany's most influential political magazine, DER SPIEGEL. It is the story of a terrorist group, the Red Army Faction, in West Germany and how they terrorized the German establishment through out the 70's. How do you compare that story to PLONING? Between the two, which is the more compelling story?

The marketing part, lady germany, is the OSCARS. If a film is NOMINATED in the Oscars, that means members of the AMPAS put their seal of approval on that particular film. The nomination will be a big boost in marketing the film to the US audience. US audience will want to see the movies nominated and decide if they agree or not to proclaimed winner. The OSCARS help the commercial success of quality movies, para rin ma encourage ang mga filmmakers to do more quality movies. Film makers do not, should not, market or LOBBY their film to the AMPAS voters. It is against the Academy rules to target for lobbying AMPAS members.

lady germany, what you wrote is totally not true. The quality of the film is the bottom line. Kahit na ibenta pa nila ang kaluluwa nila kay Satanas, it is not going to assure them an Oscar nomination, if they do not have a movie that can compete in the international arena. As an example, Jordan had full backing of its government, but it still did not make it in the TOP 9 semi-finalists. Landing an Oscar nomination is not about marketing. You are trying to market the movie to the AMPAS voters? The AMPAS voters will be insulted if you try that approach. The people who vote from AMPAS, are dedicated to their craft, and committed to their industry. If you can tell us the distributor of PLONING in the US, maniniwala pa ako sa iyo, na may bumilib sa kalidad ng PLONING sa US. As a distributor, the company wants to earn money. The marketing part is the Oscars. If a mo

Do you see PR people and managers in the US film and television industry as visible as their Philippine counterparts? NO. Work behind the scenes na lang kayo, quietly.

But anyway, judy ann tried her best puso, kaluluwa, pawis, at pera ang binuhos nila nico garcia pero making it to the oscars doesnt solely depend on the quality of the movie nasa marketing talaga yan in some countries suportado ng gobyerno- sila ang gumagastos sa pagma-market sa movie entry nila sa oscar.

I agree with rose, cheese and eddy, on the melodrama ng mga Pinoy movies. Personally, I am annoyed more than moved by the melodrama.

Sa naunang pahayag ni Juday tungkol sa pagkuha nila ng US PR firm, na sinulat sa PEP, iyong naka green blouse si Juday, nabanggit niya na may concept sila ni Ryan ng pelikula na they submitted to Mother Lily. Instead of creating a story or a movie around actors, hindi ba pwede instead to search for compelling stories written na. Then AUDITION actors for specific parts in the stories. May I suggest the book DEAD SEASON, a Story of Murder and Revenge in the Philippine Island of Negros. Author is Alan Berlow. triboDOTorg wrote a review of that book.

Lalo na iyong mga pelikulang ELIGIBLE to be NOMINATED, the top 9 foreign films. Compare with the website of Ploning. But I would not put it pass the AMPAS voters, na sisilipin din nila kahit papaano ang websites, considering na majority of Americans now get their news online. Their websites can give the first impression about their movie. Sometimes, first impressions last.

Basta maraming nagmamahal kay Juday napatunayan nya yan nong nag fundraising sya for Ploning. More than the Oscars, I think it is more meaningful to know that a lot of people love you, even in times of need, they are there in full force.

Tsunaa, my comment was based on what Alfie has been saying and doing, not even based on hearsay. What I said is not even unfounded cause those are facts coming straight from the horse's mouth.

It would be nice if you can leave other people's comment and just comment on the topic.
