Phoemela Barranda was launched yesterday, November 18, as the new celebrity endorser of clothing line Get Laud!. The model-TV host led the 20-minute fashion show held at 9501 Restaurant at the ELJ Building, Quezon City. Phoemela and other models showcased Get Laud!'s 2009 Holiday Collection consisting of elegant mini-dresses, skirts and various ensembles.
Phoem replaced fellow Kapamilya star Roxanne Guinoo as the newest endorser of the locally-manufactured clothing apparel. She is expected to bring a fresh and "evolved" image to the brand, says owner Geraldine "Gigi" Laudencia.
During the press conference, Laudencia revealed that no bridges were burnt during the transition, and that getting Phoemela does not concern Roxanne's bankability as an endorser.
"The past two years have been productive," she remarked. "We don't have any regrets. Happy kami with [Roxanne]. Fruitful din. Very productive. Okay siya. Every time na kailangan namin, nagde-deliver siya. It's just that we wanted na magkaroon ng change sa brand namin."
REMEMBERING HER LATE MOTHER. After the launch, Phoemela couldn't help but shed tears when she remembered her late mother, Proserfina Misa, who passed away last August 13 after a stroke. Her dad passed away in 2001.
"Siguro ang pinaghuhugutan ko na lang ng lakas ngayon, ay yung sinasabi sa akin ng mommy ko nung buhay siya, na, 'O anak, mag-isa ka lang, wala kang kapatid, so you have to take care of yourself.' And yung mga sinabi sa akin ng mommy ko, 'tsaka yung mga pangarap niya sa akin, natutupad naman ngayon.
"So parang iniisip ko, na I have to make my mom proud now. Yun na lang lagi kong iniisip. And marami naman akong blessings and mabait naman si Lord sa akin. It's just that my mom had to join Him," she told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press.
"It's sad. I hope she's here now to share it with me," she said in a trembling voice. "I'm so happy din, but siyempre mami-miss ko yung mom ko."
PHOEM AS AN ACTRESS. Phoem has done a lot of acting roles on film and television, including Pangako Sa'Yo, Narito Ang Puso Ko, Dubai, and The Inheritance. She was also one of the participantes in the defunct reality show Pinoy Fear Factor. Would she consider doing another telenovela or movie in the future?
"I'm doing kasi TV Patrol every day, and it's really my priority now," answered Phoem.
But if a show's producer allows her to leave the set at around 4 p.m. for her TV Patrol call time, she says she'll gladly accept the offer. "But I'm open. I'm willing to accept acting jobs."
NO RUSH TO SETTLE DOWN. When asked if she thinks about settling down with partner Ira Cruz (guitarist of the band Bamboo), Phoem said marriage is not yet in her immediate plans.
"This year is a big milestone for me. A lot of changes with family, career... and medyo nagma-mature na rin," says the 29-year-old host. "But I guess I want to show the Filipinos that as we evolve, we have to be more sophisticated and more confident about ourselves. For me, I'm wiser now.
"And with my career, ang dami ko pang gustong gawin. And I think, getting married is not the answer naman, dahil matanda na or something," she rationalized. "But I'm working on it. Me and Ira have a good relationship naman, so we don't want to rush things. Especially my career din, hindi naman kailangan na magpakasal ako kaagad."
Right now, Phoem is busy hosting the entertainment segment of TV Patrol, co-hosting for The Buzz on Sundays, leading a show on a cable channel, and steering her Get Laud! endorsement.
What other projects are in line for her?
"That's it for now. Sana magkaroon pa ako ng opportunities to showcase my talent. Sana magkaroon ako ng lifestyle shows!" she said with a laugh.
Phoem admitted that she wants to venture into acting via heavy drama shows such as Maalaala Mo Kaya? What role would she want to play?
"Kontrabida," she revealed.
