Yumao na noong Sabado, November 21, ang beteranong aktor na si Bernard Bonnin matapos ma-confine sa isang ospital ng ilang linggo dahil sa stroke.
"Multiple organ failure due to diabetes" ang sinasabing sanhi ng pagyao ng 70-taong-gulang na aktor, na ama ng beauty queen turned actress na si Charlene Gonzalez at '90s actor na si Richard Bonnin. Anak ni Bernard ang mga ito sa 1970s model na si Elvira Gonzales. Matagal nang hiwalay sina Bernard at Elvira. Ang non-showbiz wife ni Bernard ang kasama nito nang bawian ito ng buhay sa ospital.
FROM PRETTY BOY TO PALOS. Isinilang noong September 8, 1939, naging contract star ng LVN Pictures si Bernard noong 1958, at lumabas sa kanyang unang pelikula na Ay Pepita! (1958, starring Nenita Javier and Mario Montenegro) bilang kapatid ng bidang babae.
"There was no role for me, but they rewrote the script and included me as Nenita's brother. My partner was Milagros Naval," lahad ni Bernard noong nabubuhay pa ito sa isang interview sa kanya ni Gypsy Baldovino para sa Manila Bulletin noong June 2006.
Ayon pa kay Bernard, nakagawa raw muna siya ng siyam na pelikula na halos puro "pretty boy roles" bago nabigyan ng break ng LVN Pictures owner na si Doña Sisang (Doña Narcisa de Leon) na gumanap sa isang lead action role.
Ang Virgilio and Nestor Redondo komiks novel na Alyas Palos (serialized in Tagalog Klasiks in 1961) ang napiling materyal ng LVN para gampanan ni Bernard sa kanyang first action starring role. Ang Alyas Palos (1961) ang pelikulang nagpakilala at nagpasikat nang husto kay Bernard bilang Pinoy action hero. Kinilala nga siyang "Palos ng Pinilakang Tabing" dahil sa movie character niyang ito.
Walong beses na ginampanan ni Bernard ang papel na Palos, taliwas sa iba pang komiks-to-movie franchises tulad ng Darna, Dyesebel, at Captain Barbell na iba't ibang aktor at aktres ang nagsiganap.
Ginampanan din ni Bernard ang iba pang action superheroes na tulad nina Gagamba (1962) at Captain Karate (1965). Nakilala pa siya sa iba pang action movies tulad ng Dakpin si Pedro Navarro (1963), Tagisan ng Agimat (1965), Hijack (1966), at Philcag in Vietnam (1967).
Huling napanood si Bernard sa TV remake ng Palos (2008) starring Jake Cuenca and Cesar Montano.
Nakaburol ngayon ang mga labi ni Bernard "Alyas Palos" Bonnin sa Heritage Park sa Taguig City.
