"Sa unang pagkakataon, nagkasama-sama ang mga Kapuso at Kapamilya sa isang entablado!" exclaimed singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid during the Kaya Natin 'To concert, which he organized last December 5 at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Pasay City.
More than a hundred local music artists gathered together to play music and make history in one night. Although it was hard to gather all these artists for a concert, Ogie said it was all worth it because every peso that they will raise would be donated to Gawad Kalinga, a non-government orgnization that builds low-cost houses for less fortunate Filipinos.
In a speech before the main event, Gawad Kalinga's head of operations Jose Mari Oquiñena admitted that he doubted at first whether the concert would push through. But with Ogie's determination to make the concert happen for the typhoon victims, Oquiñena saw that Pinoys are born with the "bayanihan" attitude.
Mr. Oquiñena said, "He [Ogie] wanted all the stars, all the artists, work out together from different networks, coming together for the sake of the Filipino and to bring the message 'Kaya Natin 'To.' I said yes with a lot of apprehension and fear kung kaya ba talaga. Ngayon, from October to December 5, kaya naman pala.
"Mga kapatid, ngayong gabi, nagpapatunay lang na walang imposible sa mga Pilipino. At ngayong gabi, gusto po naming handugan kayong lahat—hindi lang ang mga biktima ng baha, pero 'yon mga tumulong po sa mga nabahaan. At hindi po tayo titigil sa pagtulong."
Aside from gathering funds to build houses for the typhoon victims, the concert also served as a "thank you" from GK and the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) to all the people who sent their donations and gave their time to volunteer.
"We are proud to announce that through this effort nating lahat, in January, we are ready to build the first 50 houses to resettle 50 families out of the danger area. And I'd like to thank the OPM, Ogie, at lahat ng tumulong dito at 'yong mga nag-pledge from abroad," said Mr. Oquiñena.
PLAYING MUSIC TOGETHER. Kaya Natin 'To also turned out to be a reunion of old friends.
For instance, actress Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, who has been inactive in showbiz for the past few years, served as one of the hosts.
In a short interview, Mikee told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), "I've been with Gawad Kalinga since 2003. Every year, kapag may nag-e-expo or special events, usually ako ang nagho-host talaga. Ang participation ko is, siyempre dahil Gawad Kalinga kaya nandito ako. Pero madami din akong kaibigan dito [sa concert], e."
Jolina Magdangal and Kyla shared the stage with their former co-host on SOP, Karylle, who transferred to ABS-CBN late last year. (CLICK HERE to read related article.)
Dingdong Avanzado sang his own composition, "Panahon na Upang Tayo'y Magkaisa," with his wife Jessa Zaragoza and former girlfriend Rachel Alejandro.
Rock artist Rico Blanco was caught off guard when segment host Iza Calzado asked him to introduce the next performer, who turned out to be his ex-girlfriend KC Concepcion.
The event also gave time for best buds and R&B artists Jay-R and Billy Crawford to sing their latest single,, "The Girl is Mine."
Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano sang a song with good friend Concert King Martin Nievera. Gary V also danced with his son Gabriel to the tune of "Shake It Off."
Other performers were Kuh Ledesma, Agot Isidro, Vina Morales, Jaya, Jamie Rivera, Sheryn Regis, Rachelle Ann Go, Jericho Rosales, Gian Magdangal, Jan Nieto, Top Suzara, and DJ Mike.
The local bands that performed were The Dawn, Spongecola, Kenyo, Kjwan, 6 Cyclemind, Imago, Taken By Cars, Wagyu, and Chicosci.
The son of the late King of Pinoy Rap Francis M, Elmo Magalona, also performed that night with his dad's band Hardware Syndrome.
The main event ended with all the artists sharing the stage together while singing the song that Ogie wrote—Kaya Natin 'To.
