Five years ago pa ang last movie na ginawa ni Diether Ocampo, ang Nasaan Ka Man in 2005 with Claudine Barretto and Jericho Rosales for Star Cinema. Noong 2006, tumanggap siya ng Best Supporting Actor award mula sa Gawad Tanglaw for his performance in the said movie.
After five years, may bago nang pelikula si Diether—Slow Fade produced by PLDT-Smart Foundation at Cinemabuhay International, headed by actor Albert Martinez. Ito ay mula sa direksiyon ng isa sa bagong filmmakers ngayon, si Rommel Sales, who is also the cinematographer. Ang script naman ay isinulat ni Paul Sta. Ana.
Isang pocket interview para kay Diether at sa co-star nitong si Precious Lara Quigaman ang ginanap sa Anabelle Lee's Café kahapon, March 2, kaugnay ng Slow Fade.
Ang Slow Fade ay tungkol sa isang video editor na nire-record ang lahat ng gusto niyang ibahagi sa kanyang anak na hindi niya alam kung makikita pa niya dahil may brain cancer siya. Ayon kay Diether, hindi raw niya agad tinanggap ang Slow Fade nang una itong i-offer sa kanya.
"Hindi ko agad na-visualize," sabi niya. "May nagpa-flashback sa akin kaya humingi muna ako ng kahit teaser ng movie. Nang mapanood ko at nabasa ko ang script, naiyak ako. Parang bumalik sa akin ang tunay na nangyari sa buhay ko.
"My father died when I was only six years old dahil may colon cancer siya. May naiwan din siyang tape tungkol sa amin na nai-record niya bago siya nawala. Ayokong panoorin ang tape na nasa pag-iingat pa rin ni Mommy hanggang ngayon. Kaya naka-relate talaga ako sa story at sa character na ginampanan ko.
"Pero iba ang ending ng story," diin ni Diether. "Hindi ito sad ending, dahil punumpuno ito ng hope, lalo na sa mga cancer victims, na anumang sakit mo, matuto lamang tayo to accept it, we can cope up sa situation. Katulong din namin dito ang Philippine Cancer Society."
Hindi ba siya nahirapang magpaalam sa Star Cinema bago niya tinanggap ang Slow Fade?
"No problem po naman dahil wala naman akong contract kahit saang production," sabi ng aktor.
Wala pang playdate ang Slow Fade. Target muna raw nilang maisali ito sa mga international film festivals, tulad sa Paris International Film Festival.
ANOTHER FILIPINO HERO. Last December 2009 ay naging cover ng Reader's Digest (Asia Edition) si Diether dahil sa kanyang K.I.D.S. Foundation, na ang isa sa mga advocacy ay ang pagbibigay ng medical assistance to children with cancer. Si Diether ang founding president. The foundation gained enough resources to provide educational scholarships and to donate books and school supplies to public schools in remote areas.
Dahil dito, biniro ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Diether na baka maging CNN Hero of the Year din siya tulad ni Efren Peñaflorida na kinilala naman sa kanyang adhikain na mabigyan ng edukasyon ang streetchildren sa pamamagitan lamang ng kariton.
"Hindi, baka ma-link pa ako niyan kay Angel Locsin!" sakay naman ni Diet. "It's not my intention na makilala. Ginagawa ko ito para sa mga kabataan. Nakakatuwa lang na marami na ngayong kabataan na nagiging aware sa iba't ibang advocacies. At kahit sa maliit na capacity nila, tumutulong na sila.
"Doon din ako nagsimula. Hindi naman lihim na nagsikap ako talaga para makaabot dito. Gusto ko lang magbigay ng hope, ng motivation sa mga kabataan na basta magsisikap sila, may mararating sila."
Ano ang susunod na project ng K.I.D.S.?
"Pupunta kami sa Bukidnon sa March 19 to 21. Tatawagin namin itong A Trek To Remember. Magdadala kami ng school supplies sa mga pupils sa elementary school doon, tulad ng ginagawa namin every year bago mag-start ang classes. Sana nga makasama kayo sa amin," panghihikayat pa niya.
RIMA OSTWANI. Inusisa naman ng PEP si Diether tungkol sa nasulat na nagkakalabuan na raw sila ng girlfriend niyang si Rima Ostwani. Ayaw sumagot noong una ni Diet, kaya sabi namin, kapag hindi siya sumagot, ibig sabihin nito ay totoo ang balita.
"Ganito na lang... Dumadaan talaga ang isang relasyon sa mga pagsubok, normal lang 'yon sa isang relasyon. I'm hoping for the best. Siya pa rin ang nasa puso ko," sabi ni Diether.
Pero sila pa rin ba hanggang sa ngayon?
"Mas mabuti na yung ako ang umiyak kesa ako ang magpaiyak," matalinghagang sagot ni Diether, pero hindi na siya nag-elaborate pa.
