The silver anniversary of the Star Awards for Movies was held at the Ateneo on May 28, 2009. The TV coverage will be shown on ABS-CBN on June 21.

Actress-politician Vilma Santos was chosen as the Ulirang Artista by the Philippine Movie Press Club. Her credentials in the film industry include her being 4-time Grand Slam Best Actress, Famas Hall of Famer (with 5 Best Actress Awards), 8-time Urian Best Actress and 6-time Star Awards for Movies Best Actress, among others.
Jericho Rosales was overwhelmed when he accepted his Movie Actor of the Year Award for the movie Baler. This is his second acting award from the PMPC after he tied with Piolo Pascual for the Movie Actor of the Year category in 2007. Echo was cited for Pacquiao the Movie while Piolo won for Don't Give Up on Us.
Snooky Serna won the Movie Supporting Actress of the Year also for Paupahan. "I give You all the glory, the noro, Lord," she said in her speech. "I share this with you Tita Glo [referring to Gloria Romero, her co-star in the digital film produced by Allen Dizon].
German Moreno was grateful to be given an acting award for the digital film Paupahan. "Kinakabahan nga sila kung tatanggapin ko yung role kasi gay-themed
siya. Ngayon ko napatunayan na ang mga artista gumagawa ng pelikula
hindi dahil sa pera kung hindi dahil sa puso. Salamat sa PMPC at
pinapahalagahan n'yo pa rin ang isang Kuya Germs," said the Master
Showman.
Just like Kuya Germs, Emilio Garcia was also named Movie Supporting Actor of the Year award for the film Walang Kawala. Last year, he also received the same award for the movie Selda.
Richard Gomez announced that Sharon Cuneta was the winner of the Movie Actress of the Year award. Unfortunately, his former leading lady was unable to attend the awards night.
Maricel Soriano had her share of recognition from the PMPC in the past. In 1994, she was hailed as the Movie Actress of the Year for her performance in Separada.
Ai-Ai delas Alas quipped, "Ako lang po ang artista na nahulog sa hagdan, Best Actress na." In 2003, she was named Movie Actress of the Year for Ang Tanging Ina. She also won the same award in 2008 for the comedy film Ang Cute ng Ina Mo.
Sarah Geronimo giggled as she accepted the award for being the Female Star of the Night. She asked the PMPC: "Sigurado po ba kayo?" The singer-actress took the opportunity to thank Rhett Eala for her gown.
Vilma Santos and John Lloyd Cruz arrived at the Ateneo halfway through the program. They are currently shooting a Star Cinema film with Vilma's son Luis Manzano (not in photo).
Helen Gamboa looked regal in her gown as she presented one of the awards that night. When Sharon Cuneta was called as the winner of the Movie Actress of the Year award, Ms. Helen accepted it in behalf of the Megastar.
Nonie Buencamino presented one of the awards with his Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino. Shamaine was nominated for the category Movie Supporting Actress of the Year for Lihim ni Antonio. The trophy went to Snooky Serna of Paupahan.
Baron Geisler presented one of the awards given out that night. The Cinemalaya entry Jay, starring Baron, won in the category Digital Movie Editor of the Year.
Violinist and first time actor Julian Duque was recognized as the Movie Child Performer of the Year. He played a troubled boy in the Cinemalaya entry Boses.
Richard Somes's Cinema One entry Yanggaw took home four of the coveted trophies: Digital Movie of the Year, Digital Movie Director of the Year (for
Richard Somes), Digital Movie Production Designer of the Year, and
Digital Movie Cinematographer of the Year.
Ricky Lee received a plaque from the PMPC for
being the screenplay writer of Himala, which won Best Film of All Time (Viewers' Choice) in the 2008 CNN-APSA (Asia-Pacific Screen Awards).
For this reason, the people behind Himala were honored by the PMPC with an Award for Global Achievement in Cinematic Excellence and International Recognition.
