At 28, John Lloyd Cruz knows exactly what he wants his house to be—and it's not the typical choice of other men his age. Even the actor's architect, Roland Andres, admits that he was puzzled when he and his architectural firm partner, Danny Lucas, met with the star two years ago to discuss the plan for this house.
"Sa age niya, ang first impression mo, pagka house niya, modern," says Roland. "Ayaw niya ng gano'n."
Instead, the Kapamilya talent wanted a more classic design inspired by his travels to the U.S.—specifically, Los Angeles, California.
"Ang gusto ko talaga," he tells YES!, "parang magmukha siyang bahay sa L.A., like French Mediterranean. Sa loob, American 'yong feel."
That particular design, he adds, appeals to him because it suits his personality. "Parang dito ako pinaka-relaxed, pinaka-comfortable. Pag tinignan mo siya, parang hindi siya ganoon ka-elegante, hindi siya gano'n ka-casual or relaxed, pero sakto for my taste... Kasi, parang hindi ko ma-appreciate 'yong napaka-intricate ng lahat sa bahay ko. I find it heavy. Iyong mga lumang furniture, parang hindi ko ma-appreciate, kasi parang maraming energies na ang napasa-pasa na sa kanila."
He also veers away from the modern design, for reasons of practicality. "Ang modern, for me, parang masyadong maiksi ang life. Masyadong mabilis ang pagpalit-palit. So, di ba, when you're trying to make sense of everything, especially 'yong mga gastos, parang mahirap mag-maintain ng modern."
He says also: "Kung anuman 'yong nakikita n'yo dito—laman ng bahay, 'yong dating ng bahay—sa akin talaga, number one kong kinonsider ang comfort."
