Head of wardrobe, Eugene Titus, takes pride in the fact that they make use of vintage items for the show.

He explains, "As you know, wardrobe is a huge component of the show. [Phantom has] been around for over 25 years and we work off a blue print. So the show in London is exactly the same as the show on Broadway, in South Africa, in Manila.

"Some of the pieces that we have is vintage, it's 20 years old, it's 25 years old. We use the best fabric that we possibly could...silks, so they have a long life expectancy, we use velvets, we use chiffons. Everything is hand-beaded in the show. All the shoes are custom-made. We especially fit these shoes so they have a long life expectancy."

Lungelwa Mdezaki (in photo) is a swing performer or understudy.

Tanya explains, "Lungi is actually a swing. Now a swing performer means, not only does she involve in backstage singing every night, but she’s an integral part of learning a multitude of other parts. If somebody has to go off or has to understudy another part, people actually fit to that. It’s one of the toughest roles in the show, one of the most important roles in the show because you have so many roles.

Lungelwa explained how she got this part.  "I used to study at the University of Cape Town and I used to hire a DVD, the movie of The Phantom of the Opera. But then I never thought I'd be in it. I just love it! Phantom...I used to watch it all the time. And then I got a call some time last year, in September, and they invited me to come and audition for Phantom. That's how I got in."

Titus emphasized how important Lungelwa's role is. He said, "And the most important thing is, we don't only have people going off at the top of the show but we also have people going off during the show, as well. So she's always ready in dress mode, she's prepped, she'll have make-up and if something happens, if someone trips or falls or gets injured, she needs to go on in the middle of the show. So that's all of what she needs to do. Well you know what, she's vocally warmed-up and everything will be ready for her. So half-way through the show, someone goes down, there would be enough time just to get her."

She explained, "Prompt, meaning, cause we have a book where we can prompt everything like cues, we've got all the music. Basically, this book calls all the information to keep the show going.

"So basically, there's one person here who controls the whole, kind of movement of the show. They start the show whenever everyone's ready. They stop if there's a problem. So this is the key person actually running the show along, make sure everything happens at the right time."
